Transitioning “Scab Hair” & Follicle Shape Change Theory…
If you have not read any hair science books from certified trichologist (hair and scalp specialist) and health scientist, Audrey Davis-Sivasothy, you are missing out on a WEALTH of information.
In her book The Science of Transitioning: A Complete Guide to Hair Care for Transitioners and New Naturals the health scientist shares some interesting insights about the “scab hair” phenomenon and how the Follicle Shape Change Theory plays a major role. Below we share some of what we learned from her book and you’ll also get links to her best-seller works at the end of this article. Check out what we learned from her about…
Perming and It’s AFTER-EFFECTS when Transitioning
According to the scalp specialist, one major way that perms and other relaxers may have an effect on your scalp can be heard in the natural hair community’s debates about the myth or reality of “scab hair”. Since it’s impossible to form an actually scab on hair follicles we’ll refer to it as “transitional hair”.
Transitional hair is a phenomenon that many new naturals experience just after their Big Chop, and it is defined as a combination of dry, wiry and semi-straight natural hair that does not have a defined curl or coil pattern, even with the best curl defining products.
This transitional hair (aka “scab hair”) is usually isolated to the first few inches of new growth that emerges after you’ve stopped relaxing with chemicals. Nobody knows for sure what the cause is for these changes to your hair – but there are some really good theories and we’ll talk about it right now.
Follicle Shape Change Theory
According to the “Follicle Shape- Change Theory”, extra-dry, unpredictable transitional hair is caused by actual physical changes to the hair follicles’ structure as a result of the long-term use of chemical relaxers.
Transitional hair is a temporary hair situation that is usually resolved as the follicle heals and the hair grows and settles into its permanent natural arrangement.
Some naturals are convinced that “scab hair” is a hair care industry myth or that it’s something that was dreamed up by new naturals and transitioners to explain away their unwanted hair textures.
But for those who feel they have experienced “scab hair” or transitional hair themselves, it is all too real. But, since there’s no specific scientific research to prove or disprove that transitional hair exists, theories are all we have to work with at the moment. But the proof is in the puddin’ as they say.
