Transitioning "Scab Hair" & Follicle Shape Change Theory...

If you have not read any hair science books from certified trichologist (hair and scalp specialist) and health scientist, Audrey Davis-Sivasothy, you are missing out on a WEALTH of information.

In her book The Science of Transitioning: A Complete Guide to Hair Care for Transitioners and New Naturals the health scientist shares some interesting insights about the "scab hair" phenomenon and how the Follicle Shape Change Theory plays a major role. Below we share some of what we learned from her book and you'll also get links to her best-seller works at the end of this article. Check out what we learned from her about...

Perming and It's AFTER-EFFECTS when Transitioning

According to the scalp specialist, one major way that perms and other relaxers may have an effect on your scalp can be heard in the natural hair community's debates about the myth or reality of "The Science of Transitioning:: A Complete Guide to Hair Care for Transitioners and New Naturals by [Davis-Sivasothy, Audrey]scab hair". Since it's impossible to form an actually scab on hair follicles we'll refer to it as "transitional hair".

Transitional hair is a phenomenon that many new naturals experience just after their Big Chop, and it is defined as a combination of dry, wiry and semi-straight natural hair that does not have a defined curl or coil pattern, even with the best curl defining products.

This transitional hair (aka "scab hair") is usually isolated to the first few inches of new growth that emerges after you've stopped relaxing with chemicals. Nobody knows for sure what the cause is for these changes to your hair - but there are some really good theories and we'll talk about it right now.

Follicle Shape Change Theory

According to the "Follicle Shape- Change Theory", extra-dry, unpredictable transitional hair is caused by actual physical changes to the hair follicles' structure as a result of the long-term use of chemical relaxers.

Transitional hair is a temporary hair situation that is usually resolved as the follicle heals and the hair grows and settles into its permanent natural arrangement.

Some naturals are convinced that "scab hair" is a hair care industry myth or that it's something that was dreamed up by new naturals and transitioners to explain away their unwanted hair textures.

But for those who feel they have experienced "scab hair" or transitional hair themselves, it is all too real. But, since there's no specific scientific research to prove or disprove that transitional hair exists, theories are all we have to work with at the moment. But the proof is in the puddin' as they say.

Natural Hair Products That Gave Regal Fro THE BOMB Hair!

After you watch the video, you'll probably be checking for some of the highlighted products, so here is the list. BUT, watch her vid, because we didn't include some of the actual hair tools that she like to use to this list. Anyway, here's her favorite natural hair products.

The only thing we didn't think was that great was the choice of flat iron. The Remington flat iron is a flat iron for people who have never used a top-tier flat iron and are looking for something cheap. Nothing wrong with that, it cost so little money that you really can't complain. But if you are looking for much better flat ironing and curling results, it may be wise to invest in a hair tool that  is made for ultimate performance and that will last for a long time.

Every naturalista knows (or SHOULD know) that ending "wash day" without sealing in the moisture can end in a dried out disaster, even excessive hair breakage.
loc method 2

I don't have time for all that foolishness. And you know what? That won't happen to me or you because we'll discuss the 3 best ways to seal in that moisture in order to keep your hair moisturized, healthy and ready to GROW!

We've had many articles about choosing the best hair conditioners, so now let's lock all the goodness in!

(Join 17,500+ ladies and get BlackHairOMG's Email Newsletter)

Three Major Moisture Locking Methods

There are 3 primary ways to seal moisture into your luscious locks after deep conditioning: moisturizers and hair milks, natural oils and proven leave-in conditioners. You do not have to use them all but here are the differences so you know what will work best for you.

Moisturizers & Hair Milks

Unless you are using the water only hair washing method, you'll suffer from

definitely deal with moisture being stripped from your hair after washing, even co-washing your hair does this to some level.

Hair moisturizers help to retain moisture that you lose from shampooing with commercial shampoos and keeps your hair moistened between wash days.

Naturals who would rather use something that's more lightweight often opt for a hair milk for natural hair.

Although most natural hair moisturizers are water-based, it is best to apply them while the hair is wet so it can retain as much moisture as possible, as they are most effective when locking in moisture that is already on your hair strands.

These excellent natural hair products are packed with humectants, emollients, and oils. These are also great options if your hair is protein sensitive.

 Natural Oils

Some naturals follow up their conditioner treatment with only oil while others layer oil on top of their moisturizer or leave-in conditioner ( for best-selling products read this article...).

The practice of using oils on your hair after washing is known as "sealing", the practice of sealing after washing reduces the rate of moisture loss, which is critical for healthy hair.

People will use oil as a part of their L.O.C. method to prevent dryness, reduce frizz, and push wash day back a couple more days if possible.

You can use a pure oil like jojoba, grapeseed or avocado oil or even create your own special blend from a variety of oils.

Leave-in Conditioners

Leave-in conditioners are loaded with strengthening and moisturizing properties. They are meant to periodically replace your daily conditioner or deep conditioner.

If you're in a hurry and don't have time to allow the ingredients in your daily conditioners and deep conditioners to absorb, then use a leave-in conditioner.

Note that NOT ALL leave-in conditioners are formulated with hydrolyzed proteins, so the bottle may say leave-in conditioner even though it works more like a moisturizer. Always check the ingredients list.

Many naturals have a love for leave-in conditioners because they are usually a lightweight product for hair, give you great slip, and add moisture and strengthening benefits to natural hair.

(Join 17,500+ ladies and get BlackHairOMG's Email Newsletter)

If you have fine to very fine hair strands you may find that you won't need to ever seal with oil because most moisturizers and leave-in conditioners tend to be formulated from lots of oils and butters, enough for fine hair.

If you have fine strands or looser curls and waves, then a hair milk is a great option for you.

Whenever you want a refresher between wash days but don’t feel like doing a co-wash, try reviving your natural hair with a little moisturizer to quench your dry and parched ends.

The L.O.C. Method Explained - Amazingly Moisturizing!!!

Please click the Facebook SHARE BUTTON on the upper-left to share BlackHairOMG with friends, it helps us keep writing free info!

The L.O.C. Method has been around for a while and for very good reason.

If your natural hair sucks up everything you use to moisturize it and still cries out for more moisture, then it's probably time to test out what so many other naturals SWEAR BY, the L.O.C Method.

The L.O.C. Method has been a hot topic around the web and natural hair community for the longest now because it helps so many natural-haired women go days without having to CONSTANTLY re-moisturize their luscious locks.

L.O.C. is an abbreviation for leave-in conditioner, oil and cream. The name itself tells us naturals the types of hair products we should apply as well as the order to use them.

What makes the L.O.C. Method different from so many other moisturizing methods is the layering of products in a specific order to maximize moisture retention in your natural hair. The layer of hair-healin

g moisture is systematically locked in by two products which are both known to be excellent sealants: oil and hair butter.

Both oil and hairs butters are universally adored for their ability to create a moisture layer along your hair shaft that helps to prevent water from dissipating, in effect, helping the hair stay healthily moisturized for much longer.

By using oil first and then a heavier and thicker butter on top, you're making absolutely sure that as much moisture as possible remains on the hair shaft which is very beneficial for natural hair honeys who struggle to keep the needed moisture in their hair.

The method is so easy to blend into your routine because it involves some of the best-selling natural hair products on the market, products you probably already own,  so you just need to switch the order in which you apply them to your lusciousness. You'll be looking like a natural hair model in no time!

If you want to start using the L.O.C. Method then simply follow these easy steps below:

Directions

1. Apply a moisturizing water-based leave-in conditioner to cleansed hair.
2. Apply a thin layer of oil to your hair to help lock in the moisture.
3. Apply a butter-based, creamy moisturizer to your hair to seal that moisture in.

After that feel free to use your normal hair styling products to style your hair as normal.

Porosity

The L.O.C. Method will work best for Type 4 naturals because our hair is commonly very thirsty for moisture. BUT, also keep in mind that your hair porosity level will also determine whether the L.O.C. Method works for you or not.

If your hair is normal to high porosity then you should have no problem with layering products on your hair. However, if you have low porosity hair and try this method you risk of getting limp and oily hair that could be susceptible to a lot of product build up. Lastly, if you’re not a Type 4 natural but still struggle with moisture retention then give the L.O.C. Method a try – so many natural swear by it!

Alternatives

As with all things curly hair related it’s all about trial and error so if your current routine isn’t quite cutting it then give this method a try and modify it to suit your needs.

If your curls are easily weighed down, or if you suffer from product build up you can limit the number of products you apply to your hair by applying a creamy or buttery product as your styler.

Make sure you try it out for at least 2 weeks or three wash sessions before deciding if it works for your hair or not.

Wash and Go! Kinky Curly Curling Custard + Diffuser

Check out Ally's video demonstrating a cute Wash and Go using Kinky Curly Curling Custard and a diffuser.

She uses a unique blow dryer attachment called a diffuser that is used to spread the airflow across a large section of her natural hair.

It is mainly used for curly hair, because the air flow does not cause frizz or interfere with the curl pattern. A diffuser works well for wash and go hairstyles, as you can imagine many natural ladies don’t enjoy leaving the house with their soaking wet hair. Nobody is trying to go out and get sick just for trying to be cute! Haa...

And for most women when they wear a wash and go completely air drying is not an option, many times natural hair can and will take 24 hours or more to dry.

Try waking up with your hair matted to your head, because it was still wet from the day before and tell me how much you like it. I guarantee that it's absolutely no fun.

Check out her natural hairstyles video below as she breaks down her technique for you tutorial style. But before you do that do myself and yourself a big favor right now....

The Puff Cuff’s unique teeth are designed to lock into the texture or curl of your hair and hold the clamp in place, NOT to glide through the hair like a comb or banana clip.
