5 Protective Hairstyles to Try This Fall/Winter

The Fall season is coming ladies and so is its attack on our luscious locs, grrrrr...

We can take advantage of the chilly seasons though and actually nurture our hair in "hibernation" mode.

Autumn and winter can easily be used as a time for your hair to get build up strength and length, free from frequent manipulation and summer styling.

Why You Benefit by Prioritizing Protective Hairstyles

Other than moisturizing and masking your hair from the harsh and often drying weather elements of autumn and winter hair care.

Protective styling gives your hair time to act the same way a true queen acts when her haters get to yappin'.... It lets your hair "remain unbothered", lol.

A proper protective style should keep for six to eight weeks (or more!), that way your hair is free from manipulation during that time.

So check these cute protective styles to get a few ideas and we always have more on our BlackHairOMG Instagram account, so follow us over there too!

Box Braids and Twists

Brandy with beautiful box braids

When it comes to protective hairstyles, box braids are a classic! Not only are they a statement-making hairstyle, they are affordable and low maintenance.

Box braids and twists are perfect as they will allow you to play around with size, length, texture and color.

Faux Locs

Actress Tasha Smith with gorgeous faux locs

Faux locs (or goddess braids) are ALWAYS a show-stopper type of style. As the name suggests, faux locs resemble dreadlocks but they give you the look, not to mention the length, without the years of commitment.

Faux locs are also a great way to keep a bit of tropical inspiration with you as you go through the cold months. They'll have you feeling like you're in Jamaica walking along the beach with jerk chicken and oxtails Bumbaclottin'! LOL!

Cornrows

Actress Lupita Nyong’o with cornrows

Cornrows can be the simplest of the protective hairstyles but that isn’t to say they can’t be versatile and creative. Cornrows are the easiest to pair with other styles. So you can protective style your hair with cornrows and still wear a wig in that final week when the hair is in its ripest stage.

Or add a puff or ponytail (depending on your hair’s texture). Cornrows can be dressed up or down, it all depends on what you want to do.

Wigs

Wigs are versatile

There’s no better time to wear a wig than in winter. Wigs can be the main act of your protective styling or it can act as a change-up from your other style.

The thing to remember when using wigs as your protective style is that you will still have to take the step of braiding your hair under the wig – be it cornrows or another style.

Bob Cut Braids

Say goodbye to heavy braid top knots

The bob cut braids are a classic yet edgy 1990s throwback hairstyle that all your style icons and idols from the 1990s had. Bob cut braids are a perfect protective hairstyle for someone who has grown tired of box braids and is looking to try something new.

The Sho Madjozi

All your nieces have probably had this style in recent time and there’s no denying its relevance. Both playful and cute, this style is where cornrows meet braids and it can be versatile in execution.

As long as you take care of the hair beneath your protective style and keep an eye on your hairline, you will thank yourself for protective styling during the cold months come summer.

Product Buildup on Natural Hair... A Hair Killer

Even though we don’t wish lousy hair days upon anyone, sometimes bad hair happens to good people. Our once lovely locks that have fallen flat can be blamed on environmental stressors, chemical overload, life transitions, or even seasonal changes, to name a few. That’s why it’s up to us to rejuvenate our hair back to life.

For most of us, our immediate reaction is to reach for more product, more moisture, more hair treatment, and even more salon time. These options can work, but after you’ve tried everything and your hair still looks lifeless, you’re likely in a hair rut due to product build-up.

So, what is product build-up? Product build-up is the subtle residue left behind from hair products and treatments that have not been thoroughly rinsed away. This is entirely normal and happens to anybody that uses serums, creams, oils, gels, and/or conditioning treatments in their hair.

From time to time, we simply must deep clean our hair with a clarifying treatment or purification routine that completely purges product build-up of all kinds. When we remove product build-up, we give our hair a new life, an ability to shine and move freely without the weight of all that residue. Free yourself of that hair rut and bring back the love for your hair in its squeaky-clean luster!

The Growth-Slowing Hair-Harming Dangers of Product Build-Up

Out of fear developing product build up a lot of people in the
natural hair community have cut back on using a ton of products.

When we say "product build-up", we're talking about the gradual accumulation of products on your scalp and/or your hair strands. THE GUNK!

The build-up we end up with is actually a combination of a few things...

  1. Products you manually put in your hair.
  2. Your scalps natural oil called 'sebum'.
  3. Thousands of tiny dust particles from the air.

All of that creates build up...

As this combination of substances accumulate, they mix together to create a thick gooey substance filled with potentially harmful bacteria.

You Need Washing Practices To Prevent NOT Remove Build-Up

This is major, if you're noticing thick gunk under your fingernails your follicles are already compromised and your scalp is already starting to get inflamed and irritated depending on many factors like your hair regimen, whether you live an active or non-active lifestyle and your environment.

Everyone gets to this point of product build-up different rates.

So when deciding on a wash day routine your goal should be to avoid this buildup from accumulating altogether rather than waiting for it to happen
before washing your hair.

Nobody is perfect, and most of us are guilty, at one time or another, of waiting for the gunky build-up to accumulate before deciding to wash our lusciousness and get the gunk up outta here!

How Gunk Affects Your HAIR STRANDS Specifically

Ok so, both of these situations STINK! But they are unique situations, with different types of harm caused.

Build- up on your scalp effects and behaves differently than build up on your hair strands.

See, your hair strands that are healthy and free of buildup behave and reacts to moisture when water is introduced depending on your hairs porosity level, it soaks up what it can, your hair strands swell up, getting FULL, and then they quickly lets go of excess water.

That makes your hair strands more pliable and flexible, more resistant to breakage and well moisturized until it eventually releases the remaining water into the atmosphere.

But hooooney....

When your hair strands are experiencing build-up, this gunky mess creates a barrier between the water and your hair making it difficult for your hair to soak up the moisture.

Without access to moisture, your gunked up hair strands are more prone to breakage.

On top of that, light can no longer reflect on your cuticles due to
the uneven surface the buildup creates on your hair strands, causing your hair to lose a sheen and appear dull build.

How Gunk Affects Your SCALP

Product Build-up on your scalp is a lot different and can lead to more serious issues, especially for highly-textured hair.

Your scalp is part of your skin, in fact, it's the thickest area of skin on your whole body.

But it STILL can also be just as sensitive as a skin on your face.

Making things worse, this dark moist environment of your scalp is a perfect place for harmful bacteria to multiply, so it's important to give this area extra attention.

Your EVER-IMPORTANT sebum is a thin acidic oil created underneath your scalp that secretes out of the scalp.

The purpose of this oil is to slide down, coat and protect your hair strands but with highly textured hair the loops and bends make it difficult for the sebum to slide down, causing a lot of this oil to back up and accumulate on your scalp.

On top of that, very tiny dust particles from the air easily sticks to the sebum ,after a while this built up mixture accumulates so much that it becomes visible.

It's easy to see how adding products to your scalp will increase the accumulation of buildup.

What makes build up on your scalp so difficult is due to its dark warm and moist environment bacteria has a perfect opportunity to grow and multiply.

Some of this bacterium filled gunk will eventually penetrate into your follicles interrupting the activity going on in your hair bulb which can dramatically change the quality of your hair that goes out the follicle prolonged build-up can also cause infections. Don't worry though, I'm working on a new article that will teach you how to properly remove buildup and identify which products are causing it.

Later Lovelies!

Why I Hate The Natural Hair Community?!

Looooook, yáll know that we keep it positive over here at BlackHairOMG, so don't think from the title of this blog that we are going to focus on negative things.

This very interesting and compelling video by little-know YouTuber named sophielovexo (subscribe to her) is actually very positive because it is encouraging dialogue.

You ever wondered why the word "nappy" is seen as a negative?

Well, that's one of the first questions she asks in her very calm and well thought-out video addressing what she sees as problems in the natural hair community. Especially on Instagram and Youtube.

[See our article about the Type 4 Hair Line from Mane Choice ]

And The Kinky Hair Crowd ROARS!

I almost didn't post this video because of its title, but seeing how much of a positive reaction Sophie got in the comment section, I felt this was a message that many of us can relate to.

Please click the Facebook SHARE BUTTON to share This Article with friends, it helps us keep writing FREE info!

Here's an example of one of the comments....

"FACTS ON FACTS ON FACTS!!! I’m not sure how I discovered your channel but I’m glad I did( new subscriber!) . Just from this video alone not only were you spilling tea but you had receipts (in the forms of tweets, video clips, articles, etc)

I feel like I have nothing to add because you covered everything. At least now when I get into an argument/debate about this I can send this & go about my day. This video was so well done."

So I want you all to check it out and you all know that the BlackHairOMG family shows LOVE, so if you are feeling her video and message, subscribe to the sistas channel, she's trying to get to 10,000 subscribers.

And tell her BlackHairOMG sent you!

VIDEO: Why I hate The Natural Hair Community!

Here's another comment that was totally agreeing with and loving the message....

"First off, I totally agree with you on this. The only time a blogger with 4C hair gets love is when he/she makes their 4C hair look like something other than 4C hair. BUT... that's our fault. The problem is that those in the natural hair movement want to be inclusive, to a fault.

The movement was started by 4C black women who were tired of having their natural hair rejected and were tired of being pressured by society to manipulate and change their hair to the point of damaging it..."

Regis and Kahran are a Husband/wife dynamic duo in Atlanta, GA who specialize in lifestyle and children's photography at CreativeSoul Photography. And they are AMAZING AT IT.

They bring their Afrocentric, artistic visions to the forefront in ways many photographers could only dream of.

Their AfroArt series is both visually inspiring and uplifting.

Regis and Kahran of CreativeSoul Photography

They captured the true essence and beauty of natural-haired Black girls and boys. What was their motivation?

They wanted for more young Black girls to be exposed to more positive and beautiful images of themselves and their natural hair in media and online.

When you see the work of Regis and Kahran, you'll surely agree that they have created and captured a spectacular display of Black Girl Magic that would make any person of African descent smile.

[ See Reviews for Amaki Beauty Oil w/ Blend of Jojoba, Sweet Almond, Rosehip, Primrose, Argan, Jasmine RIGHT HERE...]

The stunning images feature the young girls as the SLAY in elaborate costuming and creatively scintillating natural hairstyles.

A Mission To Accomplish

“We feel that it is so important for kids of color to be able to see positive images that look like them in the media,” said Kahran. “Unfortunately the lack of diversity often plays into the stereotypes that they are not ‘good enough’ and often forces kids to have low self-esteem.”

Seeing that such feelings are common among children who are not represented, the couple fights against these negative feelings by showcasing Black kids whose elegance and regality prove all too well that they love how they look.

One of the things that is so impressive about these hairstyle images is the wide range of styles, they truly capture the versatility and flair of afro-hair.

Going Out Of Their Way For Black Beauty

The Series of AfroArt came together from CreativeSoul Photo’s travels. The couple worked on these series in various U.S. states (California, Georgia, New York, Texas, Georgia).

Every state that they visited, they created a different theme and came up with clothing pieces and accessories that went with that theme.

And truly, the way they arranged these different looks ON THE SPOT, just shows that Hollywood still doesn't have all the talent that exists out in the skreetz, ha.

On set, they literally just styled everything on the fly and worked with their hairstylist to create unique looks for each kid model.

Like.... Who knows how to do something THIS unique and GORGEOUS, ON...THE...FLY? We are wonderfully made!

So take a look at how their vision of brilliant Black beauty on children with natural hair turned out.

And you might want to contact them at their website if you ever need real PROFESSIONAL photographers who understand how to milk all the magic out of that melanin and put it on display for the world to see!

Curly to Straight Hair (SILKY Straight Natural Hair - No Perm)

OK... OK... yes, we admit that we talked about heat as a hair-killer before. You know what? Nothing has changed even though this tutorial uses heat doesn't mean that it's best for your hair.

Here's the deal though... Folks gonna do what they wanna do!

Might as well teach them how to do it right! RIGHT?

So in this informative video, a beautiful natural, long-haired "Lovely" named Maame Hayfron is coming at you with the right information at the right time for the naturals who want to AVOID CHEMICAL RELAXERS and still rock a change-up straight style every once in a while.

According to her video, this is something that she rocks 1 or 2 times a year. Sounds reasonable to me!

So if you have some strong-held objection to other people straightening their own hair, get out NOW! And by the way... Try to relax a lil', LOL... drink some chamomile tea to calm your nerves or something, sheesh...

Without a doubt, we are all about loving what God gave YOU over here at BlackHairOMG. Still though, liking to change up once in a while doesn't mean you are forsaking your kinks and curls.

It means nothing more than girls will be girls.... We like change sometimes.

Just like boys will be boys, they like beer and uhh... more beer. Lol. So look...

Here are the 3 main points you will learn from this tutorial...

  • Test your straightening product FIRST from the bottom, under your overlaying locs. This way you can test for the best results.
  • The better you THOROUGHLY blow dry your hair before flat ironing, the less puffiness you'll end up with at the end.
  • Flat-Ironing before you have fully-dryed (while wide-tooth combing) will lead to split ends or frizzy ends.

If you watched the video, you see that she started off using a Shea Butter and Coconut oil mixture while flat-ironing and she quickly bailed out of that and went to using Mizani Miracle 25 Hair Milk instead for great results. It was not turning out well at first and we've already written an article about 5 reasons to leave Shea Butter and Coconut oil alone.

Well, you saw it first hand in this tutorial. But in the end, it turned out GORGEOUS. Good thing she started out flat-ironing the underside of her hair so that she could figure out what works as she went without having bad patches of hair visible to everyone. Very smart!

3 PERFECTLY Professional Natural Hairstyles for Work

Listen to me and listen good sis...

Don't you let anyone tell you that your natural hair is "unprofessional" for the workplace.  Your natural hair is... After all, your NATURAL HAIR.

Again... IT IS OUR NATURAL, God-created, God-given beautiful crown of beauty.

Think about this... Nobody else is forced to chemically-alter their hair to be able to punch a clock. Like... What are we even talking about?!?

Now let's keep things in perspective though, just like for ANY OTHER race and any other type of hair, there will always be styles that are not meant for work.

No matter your race or hair-type, some styles are too sexy, too exotic, too distracting, too unkempt, or too whatever for a strictly business environment.

Still, this little-known (for now) YouTuber is giving us some great and doable natural hairstyle for the corporate scene, check her out...

BlackHairOMG SPOTLIGHT ON: LoveIsInTheHairNoLye

These three cute AND professional styles are from a YouTuber that BlackHairOMG wants you to know. Ya know why???

We really want to make sure we don't focus only on the big-name YouTuber natural's out there (although we love and feature them too). There are so many knowledgeable, helpful and pleasant naturals who should get more shine.

We will happily lend our platform out for them so that they get more attention too.

So please support them. Let's love up on each other!

LoveInInTheHairNoLye is a gorgeous 4b/4c natural-haired sister who uses Curls Unleashed ORS on her luscious.

Did this young beautiful sista deliver or nah... I'm voting HECKY-YEAH! I loved it and I love her. So regal, so unique, so funny and so BlackHairOMG APPROVED!

Why LoveIsInTheHairNoLye's Vid Is BlackHairOMG SPOTLIGHT Worthy...

One of the main reasons this sista caught our eye is because she gives you natural hairstyle that a real person with a decent job can actually wear. LOL!

Let's be honest...

Many of these natural hairstyle videos that we see are TOO CUTE.

Still though, at the end of the video you are thinking "I LOVE IT, but does sis have a real job like me? I can't wear this to the office on Monday! Cute though girl.... Do you."

And you're still wearing the same tired hairstyles because the vid really didn't help you in REAL LIFE. As you had hoped...

Well, this young sista, who definitely deserve more than 3,000 subscribers. So go on ahead and subscribe to this young beauty! HERE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzRRShqfz5loV_-MYq6SFlQ

Review of the FRENCH BRAIDED CURLY UPDO Video

OK, real talk....

This is an amazing style for the summer and heat, and it is just super-cute OMG!

Listen, this sister made this amazing style look too dang easy! Upbraiding is NO JOKE!

Still though, if you practice and watch her video a few times, you'll get it.

Don't give up yourself. It takes time and patience, just like she said in the video.

Many times the main reason women don't master this technique is because they talk themselves out of it before they even began.

If you do this, commit to it. Do it until you have folks lookin at you like a hair GAAAWD like they look at her.

One-Style-At-A-Time Lovelies. Practice makes perfect.

Once again, let me tell you what products she used to achieve this gorgeous French Braided Curly Updo Look...

Teyana Taylor Betta Stop Playin' With Me!

Girrrrrrrl, Teyana Taylor has been doing the media circuit in New York to promote her new show that she will be featuring in along with her husband, Iman Shumpert, and their adorable baby girl.

But BUMP...ALL...THAT!

You see her blonde hair color and cut though?!?!

This woman's hair and style is FIERCE! She gonna have me grabbing some scissors in a minute if she don't stop playin' with my dang emotions, lol.

Everybody knows that Teyana Taylor used to have a head full of lusciously long hair, she would often give love and credit to Mane Choice hair vitamins, and maybe when/if she decides to grow her hair back, that will be her secret weapon again. But for now.... Honeeeeeey, she is ROCKIN' THE MESS outta that cut.

Teyana Taylor new show and Iman haircut

The crazy part is that I've NEVER been a fan of the blonde hair dye on black women, bit just never looked right TO ME (don't bite my head off for my humble opinion), but girrrrl, Teyana is changing my mind. At least she's changed my mind for how it fits her.

I will post a few pics below in the gallery so that you can see what I'm talking about.

Could You Rock This Blond Bombshell Look? Would You?

So now, I wanna hear from you in the comment section below. Could you pull this look off? Would you cut your hair to try this look? Or is this a "Hollywood" look that isn't practical for the normal person out here in the skreets?

Yes, I said "skreets". Don't Judge me...

Anyway y'all... Keep an eye out for her new show coming out soon called "Teyana & Iman", it's on VH1, so we're just gonna have to pray that the show aint super-ratchet. Lord knows I can't mess with none of the "Love & Hip Hop" shows no more. Girl, I feel like I'm disrespecting my ancestors watching that foolery, lol.

Hopefully Teyana's new show will help show a beautiful example of REAL Black love, family and positivity.

Like Drake says, "WE GON' SEE!"

So check out her SUPER CUTE photos that we captured from various interviews, the photo gallery below has them all and even a cute pic from when her hair was super long and full and she was reppin'for Mane Choice Hair Growth Pills.
