Black Hair OMG Extra Tips.

So we love this vid, of course, that's why we are highlighting it for you. But still, let us also give you our quick take on what we think may improve this technique....

BlackHairOMG's take on this video about safely straightening natural hair is that we would suggest that it's a good idea to consider using use cool air for the blow dryer. That way, you would not be using heat on top of more heat when you get to the flat iron (click here for FHI flat iron reviews).

And here is another cool option...

You can try banding your hair first in order to stretch it out, this helps to protect your hair because you are not putting unnecessary heat to your natural tresses. Which is always a good thing.

Has Coconut Oil Ruined My Hair? How To Use Coconut Oil For Hair

Let's keep it trill ladies. Errrrthang aint for errrbody. And you're gonna find that even though certain oils do seem to universally beneficial for almost every type of hair, honeeeey, coconut oil isn’t always one of them (unless mix with honey? I'll explain more about that below).

For instance, authentic 100% castor oil is an age-old beauty secret for increasing hair growth.

Many melanin mavens are using it on their hair and eyelashes and have seen amazing results, without a doubt.

So why not coconut oil? Is coconut oil bad for your hair or not??

What Decides If YOU Get Coconut Oil Benefits for Hair?

It's pretty clear that coconut oil for black hair gets mixed results, some naturals swear by it. Others say coconut oil is the dang devil and might try to fight you if you put that stuff next to their luscious locs, HA!

So why exactly is this happening? Besides the fact that no one oil is going to work for everyone, there is more involved. For instance, do you have protein build-up?

Coconut oil works like a charm for protein retention. So if your hair suffers from lack of protein, coconut oil is a great product for you!

However, if your hair has protein build-up, repeated use of coconut oil will jack your hair up even worse. Girrrl, your hair is gonna be snap cracklin' and poppin' more than Rice Krispies Treats.

See... since coconut oil helps stop the loss of protein in your hair, if your hair already has enough protein and doesn’t need this extra "help" then it can cause your hair to be dry, brittle, and break off.

So if this is happening to you it's likely that your hair has enough protein.

[READ ARTICLE: 5 Reasons to "STOP Using Coconut Oil and Shea Butter"!]

The Protein Problem - Coconut Oil for Natural Hair

Protein build-up also the reason many natural hair sistasdoesn’t like protein treatments or conditioners and creams with proteins in it.

Many call it being “protein sensitive” but it's really that you just have enough protein in your hair and don't need any extra.

Soooo, how do you know if you have protein build-up or not???

Well, if your hair is dry and fragile even AFTER you’ve moisturized it (deep conditioning, hot oil treatments, loc method) then chances are you have protein build up. But there’s a way to reverse it! First, check all of your products to be sure they do not have protein in them. Secondly, focus on keeping your hair moisturized with the right products.

For instance, you can use cold-pressed aloe vera for hair or a leave-in conditioner you like then seal in the moisture with sweet almond oil (I don't like the smell of A.O. so I prefer unscented...).

You will notice the elasticity in your hair come back and moisture retention pick up.

Is Coconut Oil Bad For Type 4 Natural Hair Or Is It Still A Holy Grail?

So... Is Coconut Oil For Natural Hair? Yes or No?

It truly does depend. There are so many different textures of natural hair. I can say though... Lovelies with looser textures and/or oiler hair may be lacking protein, many can even use coconut oil for hair loss prevention. Protein is very necessary, let's not get it twisted...

On the other hand, Lovelies with coarse or already dry hair probably aren't struggling with low protein at all, so coconut oil may lead to more brittle hair and hair loss. These people may benefit more from other types of oil like pure organic-grade marula oil and, of course, argan oil for hair and skin.

PRO TIP: How to Use Coconut Oil For Hair With OTHER Ingredients

When combined with other oils and ingredients, not only is less coconut oil coming in contact with your hair, but the combinations of fatty acids can have different and POSITIVE effects.

For instance, coconut oil doesn’t seem to make hair dry or brittle when combined with the monounsaturated fatty acids from olive oil or when mixed with argan or marula oil (both great for hair).

Honey also seems to make coconut oil even more beneficial for hair and the simple sugars in honey can nourish hair and make it naturally smooth and frizz free. So patch test these different combos and you may just find the secret concoction that will have you looking a natural hair model strutting your stuff down the catwalk.

How to Make a Crochet Wig - Method #3

Image result for HOW TO: MAKE A MARLEY BRAID CROCHET WIG

Crochet braids are a popular protective hairstyle for naturals. Here is the problem though.

You may be in love the crochet-braids look, but just don't have the time, energy or patience to put  them into your own hair. Well there is a solution for natural who don't have the time for braid installation.

You can make a crochet wig instead, which you will definitely be able to get done much, much faster than crochet braids!

If you’re the type of woman who always gets the itch to change your hairstyles because you get bored quickly, the crochet wig will be a nice go-to option to help you switch your style up a bit. You can remove the wig on a daily basis or whenever you choose. Wigs give you the ability to care for your hair better as well, because there is nothing adding a barrier when you need to cleanse or moisturize your real hair. In this way, you'll be able to continue nourishing your hair with the best hair products and keep it healthy.

Beautiful Crotchet Wig - Learn How To Make a Crochet Wig

What you will need:

Explanation of the process

There is a big difference with this method versus doing crotchet braid. With crotchet braids, your hair is curled prior to you installing it on the wig. If you ever had to curl your extension hair using perm rods before you know the potential dangers of using boiling hot water. You have to be extremely careful in order not to burn yourself.

No worries using this crotchet wig technique, you will not have to be on high alert for this. The cool thing is, once you have set all the hair that you are going to use you can get all of your hair curled in one easy step. Simply place all of the hair in a bowl of boiling hot water, pat dry with a towel as you normally would to remove excess water and remove from the rod and crochet away.

When you crochet the hair onto the wig it undoubtedly will go a whole lot faster, because you can easily see what you are doing. Whereas when you are doing extensions, areas like the back of your head will be very time-consuming.

This video by Lekita Antoinette shows how to make a marley braid crochet wig. Check her video out below and please share this article on Twitter, Facebook & Pinterest if you have friends that may like this tutorial.

And she doesn't hide what she is applying to her hair to make it look so healthy...

She used vegetable glycerin because it is a natural humectant, which means it makes your hair strands absorb moisture from the environment more easily.

She also combined Uncle Funkies Shining Star Skin, Hair & Scalp Elixir which has jojoba oil with virgin coconut oil to go ahead and seal in all that hair health inducing moisture.

And as always she used her special hair growth oil, we have a great recipe you can use here:

The first style she did is one called the "Nubian Bun" and it is SUUUUUPER CUTE! If any of y'all have ever used the Curls passion fruit curl control paste like she did with this style, please DM me on our Instagram and tell me if the smell is as amazing as it should be for ANYTHING with passionfruit in it.

That is one of my FAVORITE fruits smells EVVAAAAAR! Anyway, back to the styles…

Oh, BTW it seems her hair growth routine is definitely working because her hair is thick and luscious.

Protective Styles 2-through-4 Work Off French-Braids

The 2nd style she did was a ROYAL-LOOKING, cute and trendy French-braid style.

The 3rd style is used the French-Braid style and made it more formal and business-ready. It looks soooooo moist and gorgeous OMG!

The 4th style is one that I didn't see coming and have never thought to do… She did some neat little bottom buns in the back after undoing the ends of the French-braids, I think you'll like it. I did, but probably not on myself, I'd definitely put this and a teen-to-early 20s girl though!

How To Do Havana Twists - VIDEO Tutorial

You want to know how to do Havana Twists? Great, you'll find out how to do exactly that right now. When you look in any popular black hair magazine that shows the best protective braid hairstyles you'll likely see Havana style twists.

The problem is that many women don't know how to install them. Also, there are a few DOs and DON'Ts that we'll discuss on maintaining twists and then you can see the 3-part video special from Breanna Rutter on how to do it. She does an excellent job of giving a clear explanation and demonstration, she teaches you the right way to borrow hair, install invisible roots and much more. Much better than many other how-to-do videos out there.

The DOs & Don'ts Of Maintaining Havana Twists

What You Should Do...

Do #1 - Keep your twists moisturized. We love to recommend a special moisturizing cocktail using Shea Moisture Extra-Moisture Detangler mixed with Shea Moisture Damage Repair Hair & Scalp Serum and water, it works amazingly to keep your twists perfectly moisturized. Just mix it all in a spray bottle and spritz the mixture on your twists and scalp as needed.

Do #2 - Keep your scalp free of product buildup. Since Havana twists are fairly thick, you'll have more than enough room in between each twist to clean your scalp. We recommend that you use Shea Moisture Purification Masque to promote a truly clean and healthy scalp. It works great because you can apply the masque right onto your scalp to lift up any product buildup. After you rinse your scalp and Havana twists, be absolutely sure that the twists fully air dry in order to prevent odor, mold or mildew from forming in your Havana twists hair extensions (some women actually prefer to use Marley twists hair, it's your decision).

Do #3 - Be gentle when styling your Havana twists. Many women wear their Havana twists in a high bun on top of their heads, although it's a really chic and cute style, it creates a lot of pressure. The roots of each Havana twist then becomes "overdirected" meaning that this style of wearing them bends your hair root in a direction it doesn't naturally grow in which could cause your individual hairs to literally be pulled out of the hair follicle and lead to hair damage and hair loss.  If you have your heart set on wearing a topknot, do so for short periods of time and be sure to let your twists down each night before you go to bed.

how to do havana twists
How to do Havana twists tutorial...

Don't Do These Things...

Don't #1 - Put too much pressure around your edges. This is a big NO-NO. Most women naturally have 'baby hair' around the edges that is a little shorter and much more fragile. Havana twists are much larger in size, thus, there is a greater chance of them being too heavy around your hairline. To prevent breakage, uninstall the twists every two weeks and have redo them. This not only keeps your twists looking fresh, but it's also a way for you to keep close tabs on your fragile edges.

Don't #2 - Leave them in too long. Braids hairstyles like this shouldn't be left in too long, 6 weeks is the maximum that is recommend. Leaving them in any longer than that could compromise the health of your own hair and may even lead to scalp infection from lack of thorough cleansing of your scalp.

Don't #3 - Get your Havana twists done too tight. Most breakage and traction alopecia is caused by hairstyles that are way too tight. When you're applying your moisturizing spray, your natural hair will naturally expand and swell up. Synthetic hair does not expand so if the twist is too tight but your hair wants to expand inside of that twist, your hair becomes more susceptible to breakage.

Curl Defining Products Reviews From Other Naturals

1. Aunt Jackies Curl La La Defining Curl Custard

"Amazing Definition!"

By SharLia

curl defining-productsI'm less than 24 hours natural (just got my relaxed ends cut today) and this is the first product I've used. Let me say, prior to putting this in hair my curl definition was non-existent. This stuff tightened my curl pattern, and made my hair incredibly soft, and moisturized. I can't stop touching it.

I'm going to have to pick up some more, because I have never had a natural hair product work AND be so affordable. I love my natural hair but with this stuff i love it even more...TRY IT!

2. Bio Infusion Curl Creme

This curl pomade is the BOMB. Works great on dry hair. The curl creme is good but it has a LOUD fragrance... It's not as noticeable the next day. If you have thin hair you may want avoid this product. Bio infusion curl creme is paraben and sulfate free (SEE THIS ARTICLE to avoid the most dangerous product ingredients). You don't have to use a lot of the product to get the defined curl look that you want. You get a good bang for your buck with this one.

3. Darcy Botanical Sweet Coco Bean Curl Smoothing Cream

"Great for high porosity curly hair"

By Sheri

My hair requires a lot of moisture, and it's texture ranges from silky curls to frizz. I put the Darcy Botanical Sweet Coco Bean Curl Smoothing Cream product on my wet hair and let it dry naturally. My hair feels healthier and the curls are more pronounced. I also used a botanical spray gel for curly hair, to tame the frizzy sections and to have a more manageable style. I'm pleased with this product- and I like the vanilla bean smell, and would definitely purchase again!

3. Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream

"Wonderful Curling Cream"

By Rebecca Cunningham

I bought this at Target I have used the co-wash and leave in conditioner which both are great. Cantu's products are on the low end for natural hair care and it delivers what it promises. I have used Miss Jessie's in the past which is ridiculously priced and doesn't curl my hair like this. I do not even have to use gel for the style to stay I love it. I have regular black folk hair with a little water, leave in conditioner and this product it curls just fine. I have also used Carols daughter Healthy Hair Butter which also brings out the curl pattern but I have to use a little gel with that to maintain the curls. Use what works on your hair do not go broke trying to find a natural hair care product to give your hair curls that it was not created to have. Enjoy the texture God gave you and be blessed.

4. Edens Bodyworks All Natural Curl Defining Cream

"My Go-To Curl Defining Magic!"

By Karen J.

Yes, I like this product and it has become by base product from which others are judged. curl defining-products edenIt is trusted and never let's me down. I even achieved my first wash and go with this product on 4b/c hair. It produced loose coily curls. Another good product for Wash and Go is the As I Am Naturally line and it produces a tighter coil and a different Wash and Go look.

My daughter who has more 4c than b does not achieve a wash and go with this product. Perhaps her hair needs more moisturizing since she is swimming everyday this summer, before she can achieve a wash and go with this product.

The product is primarily used to keep my ends and overall hair moisturized. On my hair it produces a soft hold. I am still very heavy handed using products so it is also oily to the touch, but that should change as I master the use of styling products.

Outstanding trustworthy product.

5. SheaMoisture Coconut Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie

"Perfect"

By A. Allen

Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie is an EXCELLENT creme hair dress and conditioner--think Vitapointe Creme Daily Hairdress, 7 Ounce or Liv Creme Hairdressing and Conditioner kicked up a dozen notches just for curls. No mineral oil, petroleum and beeswax--Shea, coconut , mango, aloe silk protein instead!

This product is best used just as you would a creme hairdressing. I use this in the same may my mother used Liv on my hair when I was little for braids/braid-outs, finger curls, twist/twist-outs and smoothing ponytails. It works great as a layer on wet hair. Use it after your leave-in conditioner and before your sealing oil. You only need a tiny bit for shine, moisture and de-frizzing . I tap my finger lightly into the product for each braid, twist etc. and take a little more only if I need it.

Do not expect hold from this product! I DO NOT use it to set my "wash and go". Curl Enhancing Smoothie is not intended to perform like an Eco Styler Gel or Kinky Curly Curling Custard. On the other hand, because the product hydrates curls, it is great for finishing your "wash and go" or "rod set" after it dries. It's also great for refreshing second day hair because it helps curls to spring back and smooths frizz.

My best advice for using Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie is use it to do what it's supposed to do.

6. Kinky-Curly Curling Custard

Review From BlackHairOMG Staff:

So many naturals tell us that Kinky-Curly Curling Custard is a tough natural hair product to master. It’s full of nourishing botanicals like agave nectar extract, aloe vera juice and marshmallow, and has a very slippery and goopy texture. curl defining products A little goes a long way, as it instantly clumps and smoothes your coils. Expect extremely shiny and springy coils. Although it works best on very tight, coarse coils in the “4” category, it might pack too much of a punch for loose curls.

Overall, ladies love this product for natural hair! It works great on hair that is 4a-4c and this natural hair product helps to define your curls and coils beautifully. We've noticed that some of the curly hair product reviewers are saying that this Kinky-Curly Curling Custard does not work for their 4-something type hair. The real problem is that some people don't truly understand their hair type. 4a type hair has S shaped strands with small yet a defined curl pattern and 4b hair generally has Z-shaped strands with no defined curl or coil pattern.

Remember that this product is not a chemical curl enhancer or a hair relaxer, therefore it won't give 4b hair a curl pattern when it doesn't already have one. Our suggestion to all those unsure of your natural hair type is to wash all products/oils/gels out of your hair with a clarifying shampoo then condition, rinse and air dry your hair. If you do not have defined curls or coils and your hair looks like a lovely soft fluffy cloud then you have gorgeous 4b hair. If you have 4b hair don't bother buying this product for Wash-n-Gos. Instead use it for twist-outs or braids-outs for similar results.

Be warned.... Some believe that regular Wash-n-Gos are unhealthy for type 4 hair anyway - the reason being the tangling that comes from 4a/b hair's super shrinkage may lead to breakage. It's recommended that all hair in the type 4 range be kept moist and stretched with ends protected at all times to keep breakage and tangling at a minimum. Many type 4 naturalistas are able to retain 6" of hair growth a year following this rule so give it a try.

Oh and KCCC works really great when you pair it with a superior leave in conditioner like Kinky-Curly Knot Today or Sensories Smooth Passionflower and Aloe leave in. Other curly hair products that are worth mentioning are Deva curl products for curly hair, we will have a few reviews on their best curl defining products very soon so subscribe to BlackHairOMG today for future updates!

4 Black Women Discuss Professional Hairstyles for Natural Hair In The Corporate World

Here’s the deal: Professional hairstyles for natural hair are becoming a very big topic of conversation lately.

With the up-rise of the natural hair movement and the large number of black women working in corporate America, it was bound to become a topic of conversation.

Do you work in corporate America?

Do you have plans to work a corporate job and keep your natural hair?

Well these women do and they talk about the challenges they face, silly questions they answer and the mental strength needed to be comfortable in their own hair when many people are not yet accustomed to seeing it or even understanding it.

Professional hairstyles for natural hair in the corporate world is often a matter of opinion, but when most of those that surround you have opinions based on lack of knowledge or exposure, how would you handle yourself?

That's what makes this video interview about corporate hairstyles for natural hair interesting.

The questions that these women have to face on a daily basis are quite revealing and has caused some to shy away from enjoying their natural hair to the fullest. Check out the video below and let me know in the comment section if you have any ideas of corporate hairstyles for curly hair that you will be rockin' while you're clockin' dollars.

It always helps to know the reason WHY you are putting certain ingredients in your hair so that you can start creating your own DIY natural hair recipes later on, if you need to. So look... ghee butter for natural hair

This softens like a CHAMP because butter contains many fatty acids that your hair easily absorbs and that work to make your hair healthier, while also smoothing the hair and adding ever-needed moisture.

That's one of the reasons that GHEE Clarified Butter is an exotic ingredient used for hair growth outside of the U.S.

Milk contains vitamin D, vitamin E & many different proteins that help make your hair shinier, while also repairing damaged hair and making it softer.

Honey is a humectant, which means it attracts moisture and prevents loss of moisture content.
