Here's the deal.... Brittle, dry hair not only looks awful. It feels rough to touch and is prone to extreme breakage. In simple terms, it can have you lookin' busted and dusted. If your hair isn’t as soft and manageable as it could be or should be, then you might find your answers here, because you'll be able to try some smart and proven natural hair remedies for dry hair.
These remedies use common foods you can find in your kitchen, items you probably already have in your refrigerator. Why suffer another moment with dry hair? Get to mixing!
Some natural hair remedies for dry hair include using natural oils, like cold-pressed olive oil, or applying a deep conditioner that uses moisturizing ingredients like egg yolks and avocado. You will only know how your curls and coils will best respond to natural hair remedies for dry hair by trying them out. Remember, some remedies will get results, while others might not be best for your hair. Trial and error. That is what you can expect. If such concoctions don’t work, at least you didn’t have to pay much for the ingredients to these natural hair remedies for dry hair.
But before you go testing natural hair remedies for dry hair, be sure you are not drying your hair by frequent heat styling, such as by using a blow dryer.
Avoiding Dry Hair
Heat styling can cause a lot of damage to natural hair. Split ends, breakage, burnt hair and, of course, dry hair are just a few of the consequences.
When you blow dry, flat iron, curl or apply any other form of direct heat to natural hair, you are applying rapid heat to your hair shaft, which zaps it of moisture. Just one session of too much heat can permanently straighten your hair.
But don’t think you have to see un-shrinkable coils right after you straighten. Heat damage builds over time, gradually loosening your curl pattern.
If you must use direct heat, deep condition prior to blow drying, flat ironing, etc. Also, protect the hair with a setting lotion or serum.
Natural Hair Remedies For Dry Hair
Here are 4 natural hair remedies for dry hair. Personally, I’m a fan of using just a few ingredients. I don’t have any scientific reason for this preference except that I want to see if an ingredient responds well to my natural hair. How can I tell what works best if I’m using a dozen different ingredients? So, the natural hair remedies for dry hair that I will share will be simple and use ingredients that are readily available.
ASK OMG QUESTION:“I’ve been wearing my hair pressed straight for the winter. I love the way it looks but it gets greasy so fast. What can I do to get my flat ironed hair to last longer between washes?” - Crystal
OMG ANSWER: Flat Iron Without Getting Too Greasy - Easy!
Heeeeyyyy Crystal! OK hun, let's get to the goods. Aint no doubt that a good press out can make your day, so it’s understandable that you want it to last as long as possible.
Whether or not you have a naturally oily scalp, to get your press out to last longer, you will need to cut back on the oils that you put in your hair with everything from your shampoos all the way to your Black hair styling products.
Wearing your curly hair straight means being smart with your products and switching out some of your normal go-to's for products that work better for straight hair.
You’ll need clean and moisturized hair to keep your press out as straight as possible but you don’t want hair that is loaded with heavy oils and butters like castor oil or shea butter like you would when you wear your hair kinky-curly.
What you wanna do is start with a good oil-based shampoo that will help to keep your scalp as close as possible to its natural pH balance but won’t strip your curls.
Rahua Shampoo, Redken Diamond Oil Shampoo, Eden Body Works Peppermint Tea Tree Shampoo, EO French Lavender Shampoo or Kiehl’s Olive Fruit Oil Nourishing Shampoo are good choices that will clean your hair without over stripping it.
This is important because making sure your scalp is balanced means that it won’t need to go into excessive oil production overdrive because of being stripped.
How To: Fix/Make Your Flat Ironed Hair Last Longer
A Light Rinse Out Conditioner is Key
So look....You're gonna want to use a light rinse out conditioner and leave-in that is oil and/or silicone based to seal in moisture but won’t weigh your hair down and leave a streaky, residue mess on your flat iron and hair.
The silicone and oils will help to block out moisture to keep your hair straighter longer and the light oil keeps your strands supple. Oils like argan and cold-pressed jojoba oils are just as effective as heavier oils but finish light and airy on your hair, allowing for your strands to have better “flow” in the wind.
Avoid getting conditioner on your scalp to keep it clean and free of residue which can cause your scalp to over-produce oil later in the week.
Use a Heat Protectant - Very Important
You’ll need a heat protectant when you blow dry and use your flat iron.
Using something light like foam or a spritz is the best option but creams are also great as long they are going on light like Drybar Hot Toddy Heat Protector Frizz Fighter.
Phyto Phytokératine Repairing Thermal Protectant Spray has ceramides which seals your hair’s cuticle and hyaluronic acid which hydrates your hair and is a great choice for fine or color-tread or for those who want the top of the line in heat protection.
Aussie Hair Insurance Heat Protecting Shine Spray is a very affordable light mist that won’t build up on your hair. Nexxus Pro-Mend Heat Protexx Heat Protection Styling Spray is a really great option for heat styling since in addition to heat protection it contains polymers that stick to your hair and each other which temporarily binds your ends together if you are battling split ends.
Ever Tried DRY Shampoo? Maybe You Should...
In-between washes, dry shampoo can save your scalp and your hair if you feel like you need to refresh.
Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk, Dove Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo and Bumble and Bumble A Tint of Brown Hair Powder (which also covers greys) are three of the best dry shampoos you can use to keep your straight hair fresh and clean.
They extend your shampoos by soaking up excess scalp oil and smell great and all have dry finishes.
Girrrrl, don't you love natural hair videos where the sista actually has type 4C hair? Me too! And listen sis, you are gonna be BLOWN AWAY at these super-defined gorgeous results on real, luscious 4C hair! With a technique that WORKS FOR US with 4C hurrrr...
Your jaw gonna hit the floor when you see the definition... Matter of fact...
You can start using this video as dang proof that 4C hair can be defined! Throwin' a big bucket of Shut-Up Juice on the nay-sayers, lol!
Hey babe, nothing is perfect, and not everything is for everybody. So let's address some of the things SOME Lovelies have an issue with...
Take a lot of time to do (at first...)
Products used are bit pricey (for some folks...)
Addressing problem #1 - OK, we admit it. This type 4 natural hair routine may look like high-maintenance and like hard work but don't worry. The Maximum Hydration Method trains your 4C hair to be and stay moisturized over time.
After a while of this, the time required to make your hair look super-defined will be less and less until you only have to spritz water on it.
In fact. The more you keep your hair moisturized and defined the juicier your hair becomes. So even if it looks dry the first time around keep doing it, your hair will get used to being moisturized and defined.
Addressing Problem #2 - Products Too Expensive? Well, it really depends on who you are, how important the final results are to you and how bad you want the POPPINGEST OF CURLS.
Who am I to say? It's your call. By the way, before ending this article I want to post another very video that shows many details about the Maximum Hydration Method on type 4 hair as well. Check it out below!
BONUS VIDEO: Protective Princess + Maximum Hydration Method Wash and Go
Reader Comments on This Method...
Here's an interesting comment from another Type-4 haired natural who has her own technique... Here's what Michelle had to say:
My hair is just like hers and gets as much definition, if not more, with some Shea Moisture Superfruit Complex conditioner, a little coconut or olive oil, and some eco styler gel on wash days. I’m glad she found what works for her though...
- Michelle T.
I honestly did not know doing a wash n Go on 4C Hair was possible. I’m a believer now 😍 I can’t wait to incorporate this into my hair routine!
Caring for your edges is one of the 10 commandments for natural hair sistas, that's what helps so many grow their edges back fast. Aint nobody trying to walk around looking like George Jefferson around the forehead!
Doctors Speak On Your Edges
“The hair around the hairline is finer and more fragile than the hair strands throughout the rest of the scalp,” explains trichologist (hair & scalp specialist) Kari Williams, who works with Brandy (Ray Jay's big sister), Meagan Good, Ava DuVernay (of "When they see us" and more), and Willow Smith. She knows her stuff... She goes on to say...
“Additionally, the hairs around the hairline are manipulated, brushed, and pulled more than the other hairs, which increases their fragility.”
Assess Your Hair Loss Situation For Fine-Tuned Solutions & Growth
There are different stages of hair loss around your edges, know how serious the problem is will give you a BIG heads up on fxing the issue, so let's talk about the different stages...
Stage 1: You Have Complete Hair Loss At The Follicle
Call a dermatologist in your area and ask for a scalp consultation. If your hair has been pulled out from the root, your best bet is professional edge inspection. Give them a call! They don't bite, and will have solutions for your hair.
Stage 2: Thinning Hair At Scalp, But Still Visible
If you're still holding on to a little peach fuzz at your hairline, this means your follicles aren't completely damaged. With some tried-and-true DIY remedies, they can be completely brought back to their former glory. Let's get into how you can regrow your thinning edges at home.
But if you aren't up on the JBCO game, according to Dr.'s Cayce & McGarey, it has been scientifically proven to help relieve a ton of conditions such as keratosis, dermatosis, scarring, and, of course, hair loss.
Due to it's Riconeleic acid, a special fatty acid found in the oil, and the presence of Vitamin E, absorption of this tag-team can increase your white blood cell count (aka lymphocytes) and speed up the toxin removal process to promote healing.
Add a little JBCO, and it's like the fertilizer you put in soil to make it rich enough to grow a beautiful garden…overflowing with fresh edges.
To make JBCO even more powerful, try mixing several lighter oils with JBCO to help in regrowing your thinning edges.
Finding a mix of oils that works best for your hair will take a bit of experimentation, but mixing one teaspoon of the tried-and-true oils such as jojoba oil, coconut oil, and extra virgin olive oil is a good place to start.
Do Protective Styles Protect Your Edges??? Many Don't...
Restrictive styling restricts your life goals. If you're stressing to get your hair in a bun then it's time to let the Goody band go. If you're a braid aficionado, make sure to take a two-week break between styles to give your natural hair a rest. At your next appointment, make sure to ask your braider to create larger parts so that the heavy plait isn't putting too much weight on your strands. Your edges will thank you kindly.
Massaging To Regrow Your Thinning Edges
Putting too much tension on your roots cuts off blood circulation to your scalp. Your goal is to increase blood flow so that you stimulate your follicles and gently coax them back into those early stages of growth. This is an easy fix--give yourself head massages (or make your boo do it) a few times per week to help your circulation. Nothing says "me time" more than a massage!
Healthy Hair Reflects a Healthy Body. Do This..
Listen, we all know Mexican food is everything and pizza is life. But, contrary to popular belief, broken ends, thin edges, and a bad diet don't mix. If your hair is generally struggling to grow or appear healthy, take a closer look at what you're eating. Obviously, we all don't have the means to go all-organic everything, but cutting out sugars, high-glycemic foods, and increasing your protein, iron, and zinc intake will not only do wonders for your overall health, but your hair as well.
Use Biotin & Vitamin D For Growing Edges
Speaking of iron and zinc, vitamins can be a holy grail for your hair growth journey. Men are investing in Rogaine--why not invest in Biotin and Vitamin D? Keep in mind, it's like the wild west out there and there are a lot of sketchy vitamin brands on the market. Make sure to thoroughly read reviews for quality vitamins before buying. With proper research, you can find a vitamin brand that works for you and your hair.
Regrowing thinning edges is a commitment, so only begin this process when you're ready. Unfortunately, it's not going to work if you're being religious about taking your daily vitamins and probiotics, but still eating a bunch of crappy, unhealthy foods.
Hey, I know it's difficult to break old bad habits, but nothing will change if you change nothing!
I aint gon' hold you up sis, some of these beauty supply stores are straight upSCAN-DA-LOUS!! You hear me!?!?
Don't fall for the OKEDOKE and end up with your luscious hair drying up and then breaking worse than a box of uncooked spaghetti tumbling down a flight of stairs.
Some folks believe anything as long as the "label" says so, that's a BIG MISTAKE. And that's why they're paying good money for the privilege of some new split ends and brand new breakage, ughhh!
In fact, depending on where you live, MOST of these so-called satin scarves sold at the beauty supply store are as fake as promises from politicians.
The video below from our sista, OsaOsula Beauty, shows you how to find satin, real satin, that will hold in moisture and protect your natural hair AND extension hair as well (as long as it's high-quality, real human hair).
And after the video we also got some tips for folks who are getting skin breakouts even from real satin, so check that out below!. Now, on to the video!
Real Satin Scarves vs Fake Ones (VIDEO) - How to Find a Satin Scarf for your Hair
PRO TIP: Wash Satin WEEKLY To Avoid Skin & Hair Problems
Look... 4c, 3b, 2c, 4b and whatever else textures ALL fall under this rule, still though, this is extremely important for type 4 naturals because we usually use thicker oils and butters on our hair and as a result we saturate or satin pillowcases, scarves, and natural hair bonnets with these products. So listen love....
It may sound simple, but many don't do this... You should wash your satins every week because you do not want old products transferring to your freshly washed hair and face causing pore clogging on your face and scalp.
Clogged scalps are hair-breakage factories and if these products keep getting on your face this will eventually cause acne and stubborn acne and nasty blemishes.
I don't know about you...
But I'm too cute for AWLLATT (Translation: "all of that", for the suburbanites among us), LOL!!!
So let's get to the best way to protect your satins and get more use out of them by washing them the right way...
How To Wash Satin Bonnets, Pillowcases & More...
Satin has a smooth feel that makes it appealing for many items from bedsheets to garments. It ranges in durability as well as cleaning options.
The smart natural hair sistas out there need to know that satin has special needs when cleaning, here's what you need to do...
Wash by hand or on the delicate cycle ONLY to protect your satin.
Use cold water along with a gentle detergent, like Woolite DELICATE CARE liquid. When hand-washing, let the satin soak in sudsy water for about 3 to 5 minutes, then gently squeeze the suds through the fabric.
Rinse thoroughly with cool water and NEVER wring or twist your satin clothing because it can easily lose its shape.
Don''t put your delicate satin items in a dryer PLEAAASE!!! Instead, lay the item flat on a clean, dry towel, and roll the towel, pizza-roll style, and apply pressure to squeeze out excess water.
Unroll, remove item and lay flat on another clean, dry towel to finish air drying, away from sun or excess heat. Satin items should be ironed on a medium/light setting, with no steam. Iron from the inside-out with quick strokes, never allowing the iron to linger too long on any one spot.
We'll have two separate types of lists... the Best Sellers list and the 4 Stars or Better list (real customer ratings).

Let's keep it trill ladies. Errrrthang aint for errrbody. And you're gonna find that even though certain oils do seem to universally beneficial for almost every type of hair, honeeeey, coconut oil isn’t always one of them (unless mix with honey? I'll explain more about that below).
Many melanin mavens are using it on their hair and eyelashes and have seen amazing results, without a doubt.
So why not coconut oil? Is coconut oil bad for your hair or not??
What Decides If YOU Get Coconut Oil Benefits for Hair?
It's pretty clear that coconut oil for black hair gets mixed results, some naturals swear by it. Others say coconut oil is the dang devil and might try to fight you if you put that stuff next to their luscious locs, HA!
So why exactly is this happening? Besides the fact that no one oil is going to work for everyone, there is more involved. For instance, do you have protein build-up?
Coconut oil works like a charm for protein retention. So if your hair suffers from lack of protein, coconut oil is a great product for you!
However, if your hair has protein build-up, repeated use of coconut oil will jack your hair up even worse. Girrrl, your hair is gonna be snap cracklin' and poppin' more than Rice Krispies Treats.
See... since coconut oil helps stop the loss of protein in your hair, if your hair already has enough protein and doesn’t need this extra "help" then it can cause your hair to be dry, brittle, and break off.
So if this is happening to you it's likely that your hair has enough protein.
The Protein Problem - Coconut Oil for Natural Hair
Protein build-up also the reason many natural hair sistasdoesn’t like protein treatments or conditioners and creams with proteins in it.
Many call it being “protein sensitive” but it's really that you just have enough protein in your hair and don't need any extra.
Soooo, how do you know if you have protein build-up or not???
Well, if your hair is dry and fragile even AFTER you’ve moisturized it (deep conditioning, hot oil treatments, loc method) then chances are you have protein build up. But there’s a way to reverse it! First, check all of your products to be sure they do not have protein in them. Secondly, focus on keeping your hair moisturized with the right products.
You will notice the elasticity in your hair come back and moisture retention pick up.
So... Is Coconut Oil For Natural Hair? Yes or No?
It truly does depend. There are so many different textures of natural hair. I can say though... Lovelies with looser textures and/or oiler hair may be lacking protein, many can even use coconut oil for hair loss prevention. Protein is very necessary, let's not get it twisted...
On the other hand, Lovelies with coarse or already dry hair probably aren't struggling with low protein at all, so coconut oil may lead to more brittle hair and hair loss. These people may benefit more from other types of oil like pure organic-grade marula oil and, of course, argan oil for hair and skin.
PRO TIP: How to Use Coconut Oil For Hair With OTHER Ingredients
When combined with other oils and ingredients, not only is less coconut oil coming in contact with your hair, but the combinations of fatty acids can have different and POSITIVE effects.
For instance, coconut oil doesn’t seem to make hair dry or brittle when combined with the monounsaturated fatty acids from olive oil or when mixed with argan or marula oil (both great for hair).
Honey also seems to make coconut oil even more beneficial for hair and the simple sugars in honey can nourish hair and make it naturally smooth and frizz free. So patch test these different combos and you may just find the secret concoction that will have you looking a natural hair model strutting your stuff down the catwalk.
You may be in love the crochet-braids look, but just don't have the time, energy or patience to put them into your own hair. Well there is a solution for natural who don't have the time for braid installation.
You can make a crochet wig instead, which you will definitely be able to get done much, much faster than crochet braids!
If you’re the type of woman who always gets the itch to change your hairstyles because you get bored quickly, the crochet wig will be a nice go-to option to help you switch your style up a bit. You can remove the wig on a daily basis or whenever you choose. Wigs give you the ability to care for your hair better as well, because there is nothing adding a barrier when you need to cleanse or moisturize your real hair. In this way, you'll be able to continue nourishing your hair with the best hair products and keep it healthy.
There is a big difference with this method versus doing crotchet braid. With crotchet braids, your hair is curled prior to you installing it on the wig. If you ever had to curl your extension hair using perm rods before you know the potential dangers of using boiling hot water. You have to be extremely careful in order not to burn yourself.
No worries using this crotchet wig technique, you will not have to be on high alert for this. The cool thing is, once you have set all the hair that you are going to use you can get all of your hair curled in one easy step. Simply place all of the hair in a bowl of boiling hot water, pat dry with a towel as you normally would to remove excess water and remove from the rod and crochet away.
When you crochet the hair onto the wig it undoubtedly will go a whole lot faster, because you can easily see what you are doing. Whereas when you are doing extensions, areas like the back of your head will be very time-consuming.

The 3rd style is used the French-Braid style and made it more formal and business-ready. It looks soooooo moist and gorgeous OMG!
The 4th style is one that I didn't see coming and have never thought to do… She did some neat little bottom buns in the back after undoing the ends of the French-braids, I think you'll like it. I did, but probably not on myself, I'd definitely put this and a teen-to-early 20s girl though!
