Top 10 Natural Remedies to Strengthen Your Hair

Please click the Facebook SHARE BUTTON on the upper-left to share BlackHairOMG with friends, it helps us keep writing free info!

Natural hair is a real luxury and our absolute PRIDE when it is healthy and well-groomed. So let's talk about how to keep our lusciousness looking irresistible and on full "POPPIN'" status when heat, dust, salt water, and other factors regularly damage it, causing the hair loss, split ends, and lack of shine.

The answer to this problem isn't tough to find though. It doesn't necessarily have to consist of expensive salon treatments and using professional high-class hair products (which are not always as great as adevertised).

If you really want to restore a healthy look, shine, and the beauty of your hair, turn to these natural remedies for help. They are the option number one not only due to their cosmetic effect, but also the healing properties.

  1. Magic of Vegetable Oils

When talking about natural remedies for hair, we simply can’t ignore vegetable oils, so they are deservedly at the top of our list. It’s well-known that plant oils are a gold mine of vitamins and nutrients, they easily penetrate to the hair shafts to help retain moisture. Use olive, burdock, coconut, argan, rosemary, jojoba oils to restore hair that has become damaged from curling irons and coloring, to add a natural shine, healthy look, softness, and resilience to your hair. You can either rub the pure oil into the scalp or make a natural hair mask:

  • The hair mask with burdock oil is a simple and effective way of nourishing the hair follicles and is perfect for all types of hair. Mix 2 tablespoons of oil with an egg yolk and massage your scalp with a warm mask for a few minutes, rubbing it into the skin and curls, focusing on the tips. Then, wash your hair with an ordinary shampoo. Use this remedy once a week.
  • Take 3 tablespoons of olive oil and add 5 drops of the ylang-ylang essence, apply this mixture on wet hair and сover it with a shower cap. Keep this remedy on your head for about 15 minutes, after that thoroughly wash the hair.

If your hair is naturally oily, don’t abuse vegetable oil treatment, while the dry hair can be restored in this way even twice a week.

  1. Onion Juice Treatment

Do you know that the onion is extremely rich in vitamins and has medical properties? Can you imagine those fantastic results you’ll get after regular usage of onion masks?

  • Grate 1 onion and squeeze out the juice. Then add 2 tablespoons of burr or castor oil, 2 teaspoons of squeezed lemon juice, and a banana mashed with a fork. Apply the mixture from roots to tips and leave it on for about 15 minutes. The mask is perfect for weakened hair with oily roots.

Onion juice significantly heals, strengthens, revitalizes the hair, accelerates its growth, prevents and stops hair loss, improving the structure of your curls as a whole. The only con of the onion treatment is the smell you can’t get rid off when your hair is getting wet.

  1. Power of Eggs for Afro Curls

Most of the nutrients of the egg are concentrated in the yolk – it’s a trove of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Vitamins A, D, E, B, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, folic and nicotinic acids restore the hair structure, strengthen, refresh and tone, prevent hair loss and stimulate growth, protect from negative environmental factors, make your curls smooth and shiny.

  • Try the egg yolk shampoo instead of your ordinary one twice a month to give your cute curls a new life. Beat 2 yolks, add 2 teaspoons of purified water and 2-3 drops of your favorite essential oil.
  • Or treat your hair with this fairy egg yolk mask: make a mixture of 2 yolks, 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of castor oil and a teaspoon of brandy (or cognac), heat it up and apply from roots to tips. Cover your hair with a plastic bag and a terry towel. Keep this remedy for 1-2 hours and wash with your favorite shampoo.

  1. Exotic Coconut

Coconut is rich in proteins, iron, potassium, and other essential nutrients, so that it promotes hair growth, repairs damaged hair, prevents hair loss, breakage and dandruff.

  • Use a clear coconut milk or oil: gently massage the product all over your scalp (or on the targeted areas only), keep it overnight and shampoo as usual next morning.
  • Experiment with coconut oil mask: mash a half of banana with a fork and add 2 tbsp of coconut oil and 1 tbsp of sour cream. Mix all ingredients thoroughly and heat the remedy up, apply on the hair and rinse off in 30-40 minutes.

  1. Honey Natural Care

Honey is another natural remedy that your curly hair is gonna fall in love with. No matter if you use it in its pure form or as a part of a homemade hair mask, honey will restore your hair, prevent loss and can even be used as a lighter.

  • Honey conditioner recipe: mix 100 g of heated on a water bath honey and 2 tbsp of olive oil. Massage it over the scalp and keep for 40-50 minutes, then rinse with a mild shampoo. Besides strengthening, this remedy will moisturize, nourish, and stimulate the hair growth, making your natural locks silky and shiny.
  • Another honey-based mask idea: all you need is 1 tbsp of honey and the same amount of aloe juice. This treatment should be applied for about 10 minutes before washing the hair twice a week. Besides, this super mask has a great advantage: it can be kept in a fridge, prepared in advance.

  1. Avocado in Action

Avocado fruit is an excellent means for growing and strengthening natural hair. Whether it is the fruit, seed or its oil, avocado contains all necessary vitamins, potassium, iron, folic acid, and copper. This winning mix of nutrients makes all avocado-based hair masks one of the most effective for home hair treatment and restoration.

  • Make a hair mask with a mashed ripe avocado, 1 tbsp of olive or jojoba oil and another tablespoon of yogurt. Use this remedy once a week to maintain the luxury look of your Afro curls.
  • Besides, you can massage avocado oil into your scalp once or twice a week to keep your hair moisturized enough, healthy and shiny.

  1. The Best of the Dairy Products

Do you suffer from excessive dryness of hair or tips? If so, this hair conditioning treatment with mayonnaise is what you need! However, ladies with normal hair can also get additional nutrition and moisturizing, following this easy tip:

  • Apply mayonnaise to wet hair and leave it on your head for 1 hour. Then rinse it well and shampoo. Voila! Your hair will be grateful!

Yogurt is the second best dairy product for hair treatment, strengthening and preventing dandruff.

  • Take a pure yogurt and spread it over the hair, massaging it into the scalp. Then cover the hair with a plastic bag and wrap with a towel for about 20 minutes. After that shampoo your hair like you always do it.

  1. Rye bread = Strengthening + Growth

The use of rye bread (which is rich in B vitamins) for hair helps to prevent hair loss, strengthen, normalize the hydrolipid balance of the scalp, as well as to clean it mildly.

  • Soak some slices of rye bread in water, then mash it with hands and add a couple drops of camphor oil. Apply this mixture on your hair, cover it with a plastic bag and a towel. In one hour shampoo your flirty locks thoroughly to be sure no bread crumbs left in your shag.

  1. Hair Conditioning with Apple Cider Vinegar

Our hair has an ideal pH of 4 to 5. The acidity of the apple cider vinegar rinse means that it helps maintain the pH balance of your hair and remove buildup without stripping the hair of its natural oils at the same time.

  • Apple cider vinegar should be used instead of your regular hair conditioner after shampooing your hair. Just dilute 2 tablespoons of ACV with 1 cup of water and apply this mixture after shampooing, massage your scalp during a couple of minutes and then rinse your hair thoroughly.

  1. Lemon Juice for Healthy Hair

Ordinary lemon is a strongly recommended and trusted ingredient to fight against hair loss and strengthen it. Containing vitamins C, B, and various minerals, the lemon has become a must-have of many homemade masks and conditioners.

  • Squeeze 2 lemons into a cup of water and use this mixture after shampooing just like it’s described in paragraph 9 about the apple cider vinegar.

P.S. Remember Lovelies, love yourself and take care of your gorgeous hair to look your best and turn a lot of heads under any circumstances. Use rich gifts of nature, listed above, to restore, strengthen and treat your magnificent curls. And if it’s not enough for you, check out one extra sweet idea of natural remedy for hair strengthening right below!

Grow Your Hair With This Delicious SUPER-Fruit... ? [2018]

Please click the Facebook SHARE BUTTON on the upper-left to share BlackHairOMG with friends, it helps us keep writing free info!

What are two things that most of us "Lovelies" go crazy for???

Tell me I'm lying, when I say "great food and THE BOMB hair".

If I'm lyin', I'm flyin'.... And I aint went no-dang-where yet.... Lol!

The cool thing is... Sometimes something delicious can actually help you reach you hair greatness goals.

Y'all betta recognize the gang of benefits that certain fruits and vegetables can offer your hair, it's for real. The whole ‘juice and berries’ concept isn’t bad AT ALL.

There are recipes for beauty regimens that contain everything from egg shells to rice water, and their uses have been passed down for generations among many cultures. One deliciously beneficial ingredient is the Paw-Paw fruit, also known as Papaya.

[Follow BlackHairOMG on Instagram we got the hair pics & videos FOR DAYS!]

Paw-Paw A.K.A Papaya A.K.A. Hair & Scalp Helper!

The papaya contains a large amount of Vitamin C, which is key for its restorative and healing properties. It also contains about 224% of your daily needs of vitamins and mineral. The papaya enzyme called papain breaks down proteins, fats and carbohydrates and works to prevent stomach disorders, diabetes, colorectal cancers, intestinal parasite infections, nerve pains and even elephantoid growths.

Carpaine is another chemical that the papaya has that kills off certain parasite infections. Papaya also has a host of other vitamins, acids, enzymes and minerals such as magnesium, copper, fiber, folic acid, vitamins E, A, B6, B1, beta carotene, and riboflavin. The chemical compounds in papaya are so effective that many people take the papaya enzymes in pill form.

What Papaya Does For Your Hair

As we talked about in or Water Only Washing for hair health article, healthy sebum promotes hair growth.

The folic acid that papaya contains, as well as the Vitamin C improve circulation blood circulation throughout your scalp. The result of this is that your scalp is fed the nutrients and minerals that are needed to encourage healthy hair growth and stimulate your ever-important sebaceous glands. The sebum that is produced nourishes, conditions and protects the scalp, providing a healthy environment for new growth to flourish.

How To Use Papaya Topically

  • Blend 1 cup of papaya with 1 cup carrier oil and ½ cup Aloe Vera juice. Apply this mixture to your scalp and let it sit for 15-30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

Hair Growth Isn't The Only Reason To Get Your Paws on Some Paw-Paw!

Papaya is used for getting rid of nasty dandruff too. Because papaya contains so much Vitamin C and A, it aids in the removal of dead skin cells, encourages healthy cell regeneration and nourishes your hair shaft. If you’re fighting against that dirty-lookin' dandruff, papaya could be the solution to your problems.

Papaya seeds have complex anti-fungal properties that help ward off and prevent dandruff. You can either use papaya seed oil, or you can blend the papaya seeds together with a good carrier oil to make a paste, apply it to the scalp and rinse out.

Product Build Up BE DARNED!

Product build-up and dead scalp skin are two major problems associated with stagnant hair growth. When the pores of your scalp are clogged, girrrrrrl, you are beggin' for trouble. they don’t get the nutrients and moisture that is needed to produce sebum. This can cause hair fall,

In that condition, your scalp doesn't get the nutrients and moisture that is needed to make hair-health promoting sebum. This can cause hair fall, dandruff and even make that your precious new growth is all brittle and ready to break of before it can even do anything. Papaya can remove residue, excess oils and dirt, from both the hair and scalp.

A DOPE Natural Conditioner!

The same enzymes that are used to tenderize meat also have a conditioning effect on the hair. We talked about how papaya can remove product build-up on your luscious tresses. Now once that gunky build-up is gone, your cuticles are able to open up and suck up that moisture and those nutrients can be infused into your hair shaft, and then shut back so that the moisture and nutrients are locked in.

You can find many products that contain papaya leaf extract which has been shown to revitalize and condition hair, or you could blend ½ of a papaya with 1 cup of yogurt and 1 tbsp. of honey to make your own homemade conditioner.

If you have very thick type 4 hair, you probably know how difficult it can be to get those SUPER-DEFINED curls that you see so often featured on our Instagram.

But don't even trip honey, because your girl NaturallyTemi grabbed her camera, her Hydratherma Foaming Mousse, Jsheaoil and a ton of assorted sized perm rods just so she could teach you how to get the most POPPINEST CURLS (LOL) in the building! Fried chicken grease don't POP like this boo!

What's really dope is that she give a 360 view of the curls after she's done droppin' some knowledge on you. She aint playin' round....

[Follow BlackHairOMG on Instagram we got the hair pics & videos FOR DAYS!]

Here are her products of choice in this BOMB VIDEO TUTORIAL...

She wrote about the style too. She says she usually gets about 5-6 days from this super-defined style.

As far as maintenance goes, she keeps her hairstyle together once it is out of the curl rods by putting it in 3 ponytails and putting a hair bonnet on. She fluffs and shakes that bad girl in the morning and BAM! Ready to go!

Temi says that the Hydratherma Foaming Mousse helps retain moisture in her hair to an extent, but the leave-in she puts in before the mousse on is what mainly keeps her hair super-moisturized. She also mentions that she definitely prefers Hydratherma Foaming Mousse over the popular Creme of Nature Foaming Mousse.

The "Awww HECKY NAW" Moment of the Video

There was one big drawback to this hairstyle for folks that might be a little on the "lazy natural" side, or simply "AINT GOT TIME FOR ALLDAT!"... What's the big downer you ask?

Well... She mentions that she left the rollers in for two days! TWO DANG DAYS! Girrrrrrrl..... But I admit, it was super-cute and she says didn't go out much in those days and if she did need to go out she would wear a cute hair scarf.

So pretty much, try doing this style when you know you don't have to be anywhere for a couple days, lol. Netflix and chill on them fools, then step out like BOW! Curl on super-defined Fleek mode! Check out the video below!

BTW... Some of the ladies were askin' about that FIRE lipstick she was wearing, she says it is from the Colouredrainelipstick line, it's call "2am".

BlackHairOMG's take on this video about safely straightening natural hair is that we would suggest that it's a good idea to consider using use cool air for the blow dryer. That way, you would not be using heat on top of more heat when you get to the flat iron (click here for FHI flat iron reviews).

And here is another cool option...

You can try banding your hair first in order to stretch it out, this helps to protect your hair because you are not putting unnecessary heat to your natural tresses. Which is always a good thing.

A Brush That Straightens Hair?!? Does it Work?

People are drooling over the new Dafni hair straightening brush! Have you seen it?

Facebook posts have been getting shared like crazy of this new hair tool, questions are being raised and just the thought of a brush that can straighten in a couple of minutes, much quicker than a flat-iron, has everybody requesting a new gift for the upcoming holiday season.

Dafni

The brush is from an Italian company called DAFNI and is a "hair straightening ceramic brush." The idea is similar to any other straightening tool - you slowly run the hot ceramic through your hair and it gets rid of any waves or kinks.

What DAFNI claims makes they're product better than competitors is that it has more surface area than the traditional straightener, which means that hair could be done in as little as two minutes. Plus since it's already a brush, the hair wouldn't get tangled, according to the beauty product company.

Why Is The Dafni Straightener Brush So Instantly Popular?

This new hair straightening brush is popular because of ease-of-use in our opinion. Beauty-conscious women are always looking for ways to change our look and style. Looking the same day after day gets boring. Even though we may not straighten often it's nice to have the ability to do so and do it quickly.  So the question is…

Does the Dafni work on Kinkier Natural Black Hair?

Well, here is a video from a Facebook user named Kimberley Satterwhite, she posted her first time using it and she thought you might like that we share it with you right here. Check it out!

Be honest, what do you think of the results?

Given the texture of the little girl’s hair that it was demonstrated on, do you think this will work for your texture? It looks very good to us!

BUT.... BUT.... It costs $300 (Now down to $200) For $300 it needs to wash, condition and blow dry my hair too!

Dafni3

Dafni2

Here's Kimberly's (the mom) Comment From Her Video Post:

Sometimes things look so good you have to think, "That just can't be!" And "It's just too good to be true!" Like how I earn 6 figures as a stay at home mom. I just say, "Let's just Try it & see"! I understand how it feels to be a total skeptic of something! So I'm going to try out the 'Dafni Ceramic Straightening Brush'.
DOES IT WORK?! You can see for yourself IF In Fact IT Works or not?! This takes the place of flat ironing and saves you MAJOR TIME! I am TOOOOO EXCITED!!!!!

NOTE: I was so excited to use this i didn't wash my daughters hair. She does have GEL in her hair i just ran it through really quick to test it. Imagine this on her CLEAN hair! WOW. I'm very happy with this product!

You can find the Dafni brush at the official retailer, Dafni for a whopping $300 $200 or I found the perfect duplicate for you right here for less than $50 (for now). Who knows what they'll do when they see their competition selling for $200.

Curl Defining Products Reviews From Other Naturals

1. Aunt Jackies Curl La La Defining Curl Custard

"Amazing Definition!"

By SharLia

curl defining-productsI'm less than 24 hours natural (just got my relaxed ends cut today) and this is the first product I've used. Let me say, prior to putting this in hair my curl definition was non-existent. This stuff tightened my curl pattern, and made my hair incredibly soft, and moisturized. I can't stop touching it.

I'm going to have to pick up some more, because I have never had a natural hair product work AND be so affordable. I love my natural hair but with this stuff i love it even more...TRY IT!

2. Bio Infusion Curl Creme

This curl pomade is the BOMB. Works great on dry hair. The curl creme is good but it has a LOUD fragrance... It's not as noticeable the next day. If you have thin hair you may want avoid this product. Bio infusion curl creme is paraben and sulfate free. You don't have to use a lot of the product to get the defined curl look that you want. You get a good bang for your buck with this one.

3. Darcy Botanical Sweet Coco Bean Curl Smoothing Cream

"Great for high porosity curly hair"

By Sheri

My hair requires a lot of moisture, and it's texture ranges from silky curls to frizz. I put the Darcy Botanical Sweet Coco Bean Curl Smoothing Cream product on my wet hair and let it dry naturally. My hair feels healthier and the curls are more pronounced. I also used a botanical spray gel for curly hair, to tame the frizzy sections and to have a more manageable style. I'm pleased with this product- and I like the vanilla bean smell, and would definitely purchase again!

3. Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream

"Wonderful Curling Cream"

By Rebecca Cunningham

I bought this at Target I have used the co-wash and leave in conditioner which both are great. Cantu's products are on the low end for natural hair care and it delivers what it promises. I have used Miss Jessie's in the past which is ridiculously priced and doesn't curl my hair like this. I do not even have to use gel for the style to stay I love it. I have regular black folk hair with a little water, leave in conditioner and this product it curls just fine. I have also used Carols daughter Healthy Hair Butter which also brings out the curl pattern but I have to use a little gel with that to maintain the curls. Use what works on your hair do not go broke trying to find a natural hair care product to give your hair curls that it was not created to have. Enjoy the texture God gave you and be blessed.

4. Edens Bodyworks All Natural Curl Defining Cream

"My Go-To Curl Defining Magic!"

By Karen J.

Yes, I like this product and it has become by base product from which others are judged. curl defining-products edenIt is trusted and never let's me down. I even achieved my first wash and go with this product on 4b/c hair. It produced loose coily curls. Another good product for Wash and Go is the As I Am Naturally line and it produces a tighter coil and a different Wash and Go look.

My daughter who has more 4c than b does not achieve a wash and go with this product. Perhaps her hair needs more moisturizing since she is swimming everyday this summer, before she can achieve a wash and go with this product.

The product is primarily used to keep my ends and overall hair moisturized. On my hair it produces a soft hold. I am still very heavy handed using products so it is also oily to the touch, but that should change as I master the use of styling products.

Outstanding trustworthy product.

5. SheaMoisture Coconut Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie

"Perfect"

By A. Allen

Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie is an EXCELLENT creme hair dress and conditioner--think Vitapointe Creme Daily Hairdress, 7 Ounce or Liv Creme Hairdressing and Conditioner kicked up a dozen notches just for curls. No mineral oil, petroleum and beeswax--Shea, coconut , mango, aloe silk protein instead!

This product is best used just as you would a creme hairdressing. I use this in the same may my mother used Liv on my hair when I was little for braids/braid-outs, finger curls, twist/twist-outs and smoothing ponytails. It works great as a layer on wet hair. Use it after your leave-in conditioner and before your sealing oil. You only need a tiny bit for shine, moisture and de-frizzing . I tap my finger lightly into the product for each braid, twist etc. and take a little more only if I need it.

Do not expect hold from this product! I DO NOT use it to set my "wash and go". Curl Enhancing Smoothie is not intended to perform like an Eco Styler Gel or Kinky Curly Curling Custard. On the other hand, because the product hydrates curls, it is great for finishing your "wash and go" or "rod set" after it dries. It's also great for refreshing second day hair because it helps curls to spring back and smooths frizz.

My best advice for using Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie is use it to do what it's supposed to do.

6. Kinky-Curly Curling Custard

Review From BlackHairOMG Staff:

So many naturals tell us that Kinky-Curly Curling Custard is a tough natural hair product to master. It’s full of nourishing botanicals like agave nectar extract, aloe vera juice and marshmallow, and has a very slippery and goopy texture. curl defining products A little goes a long way, as it instantly clumps and smoothes your coils. Expect extremely shiny and springy coils. Although it works best on very tight, coarse coils in the “4” category, it might pack too much of a punch for loose curls.

Overall, ladies love this product for natural hair! It works great on hair that is 4a-4c and this natural hair product helps to define your curls and coils beautifully. We've noticed that some of the curly hair product reviewers are saying that this Kinky-Curly Curling Custard does not work for their 4-something type hair. The real problem is that some people don't truly understand their hair type. 4a type hair has S shaped strands with small yet a defined curl pattern and 4b hair generally has Z-shaped strands with no defined curl or coil pattern.

Remember that this product is not a chemical curl enhancer or a hair relaxer, therefore it won't give 4b hair a curl pattern when it doesn't already have one. Our suggestion to all those unsure of your natural hair type is to wash all products/oils/gels out of your hair with a clarifying shampoo then condition, rinse and air dry your hair. If you do not have defined curls or coils and your hair looks like a lovely soft fluffy cloud then you have gorgeous 4b hair. If you have 4b hair don't bother buying this product for Wash-n-Gos. Instead use it for twist-outs or braids-outs for similar results.

Be warned.... Some believe that regular Wash-n-Gos are unhealthy for type 4 hair anyway - the reason being the tangling that comes from 4a/b hair's super shrinkage may lead to breakage. It's recommended that all hair in the type 4 range be kept moist and stretched with ends protected at all times to keep breakage and tangling at a minimum. Many type 4 naturalistas are able to retain 6" of hair growth a year following this rule so give it a try.

Oh and KCCC works really great when you pair it with a superior leave in conditioner like Kinky-Curly Knot Today or Sensories Smooth Passionflower and Aloe leave in. Other curly hair products that are worth mentioning are Deva curl products for curly hair, we will have a few reviews on their best curl defining products very soon so subscribe to BlackHairOMG today for future updates!

Best Bantu Knot Out Alternative - Video

This amazing bantu knot out alternative is what Jessica Pettway calls her “bantu flat out.” Never heard of that before? Well, that's because the bantu flat out is her unique technique.

For years in the natural hair game, Jessica couldn’t get the bantu knot out to work for her no matter how hard she tried! Not to mention, she didn't like the uncomfortable idea of trying to sleep with a whole bunch of knots in her head. So she invented an amazing alternative to the bantu knot out, a natural hairstyles version for women who are "Bantu knot challenged". Now naturals who have trouble with getting bantu knots can also enjoy the definition of a bantu knot out!

So what do you think about this bantu knot out alternative?

Many naturals with 3c, 4a, 4b, and 4c hair complain about their bantu knots never coming out right.
Have any of you tried this before? Some say that this bantu knot out alternative method looks somewhat similar to pin curls. The results are really stunning and defined natural curls and Jessica has proven that that is definitely a great natural hair alternative to traditional Bantu Knots.

How to Transition From Relaxed to Natural Hair In 7 Steps

Transitioning from relaxed to natural hair when beginning your natural hair journey is a common experience.

To go from permed to natural hair, you have two options: Transitioning or The Big Chop. Which one you choose is entirely up to you. There's no textbook right way or wrong way to begin your natural hair journey. It doesn’t matter how you get there, it's about getting there and doing what you're most comfortable with doing.

The transition from relaxed hair to natural hair can be a challenge - sometimes dealing with split ends, odd curly bits, and some hair breakage. But don't give up, it's not called a "journey" for nothing, all journeys have some bumps in the road. But rest assured that your hair is on a route to recovery. Getting back to your "natural" beauty is a beautiful thing and an interesting road to self discovery.

What Does Transitioning From Relaxed to Natural Hair Mean?

Like we talked about earlier, transitioning is a way to avoid cutting all of your hair off, doing "The Big Chop" as it is called.

Transitionintransitioning from relaxed to natural hairg your hair to natural is the process of eliminating all chemical treatments and allowing your natural hair to grow out while gradually trimming the chemically-processed ends away. It takes time and patience but for many women it is worth the wait because they may be uncomfortable big chopping.

Most women who transition to natural hair slowly trim their relaxed ends away as they grow the relaxer/perm out of their hair, this also helps to keep breakage manageable and it gives your hair a more healthy appearance.

Pros of Transitioning From Relaxed to Natural Hair :

  • You have the time to learn about your particular hair type.
  • If you are not comfortable with short hair, then you can avoid that adjustment period, and avoid the wait of growing your hair back out.
  • During transitioning you have the time to perfect your hair styling skills.

Cons of Transitioning From Relaxed to Natural Hair :

  • The texture of your hair will not be consistent: which means if you decide to wear your hair in a braid out or twist out style the root of your hair might be curly while your ends will be bone straight (To avoid this simply roll the ends of your hair with rods or rollers).
  • The process of transitioning takes longer than if you just did “the big chop”.

How to Transition From Relaxed to Natural Hair In 7 Steps

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #1

Keep your hair hydrated. The biggest struggle with transitioning your hair is preventing breakage due to dryness and damage. Do what you can to keep your hair conditioned and fully hydrated by using a conditioner on a regular basis. Every night before bed, thoroughly moisturize your hair with either coconut oil or olive oil and let it soak in good for 30 minutes to 1 hour. This will help replenish your hair with nutrients that will strengthen the demarcation line (the part of the hair where the transition is happening).

  • When you wash your hair, add a little conditioner to your strands prior to shampooing. This will help to keep the shampoo from stripping all the moisture. Then, condition as usual.
  • Consider using a leave-in conditioner for your hair during the day. Apply some to your hair before you style it, paying careful attention to the demarcation line.

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #2

Use a deep conditioner regularly. Deep conditioning treatments take moisturizing your hair to the next level. Although deep conditioners are usually only used once a month or so, you need to do it more often when transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. Purchase a deep-conditioning treatment for naturals and apply it to your hair at least once every 7 days. Or if you have the money to do so, you can go to the hair salon once a week and get deep-conditioning treatments regularly.

  • Follow the bottle instructions for your deep conditioner.
  • If your money is low, another great alternative to a deep conditioner is using mayonnaise. Although it sounds a little gross, it can work wonders on adding moisture to your hair. Apply it to your hair once a week for 30 minutes to an hour.
  • If you decide to have a professional deep condition your hair, try looking for someone who specializes in transitioning hair. They’ll be able to provide you with products and services designed specifically to meet your needs.

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #3

Don't put heat on your hair, it's a natural hair killer. In general, hot tools should be avoided if you’re trying to protect your hair. Using curling irons, flat irons, and blow driers can stress your hair and cause breakage, specifically at the line of demarcation. While transitioning your hair, do all that you can to allow it to be as natural as possible. Avoid hot tools, and if necessary, limit their use to only one day a week at most.

  • If you absolutely must use hot tools, keep them away from the demarcation line and avoid using them on your roots where your natural grow-out is forming.

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #4

Limit the amount of times you wash your hair. This goes hand in hand with adding moisture to your hair; washing your hair frequently strips your hair of its natural oils that help keep it strong. So limit hair washing and some women have had great success with co-washing natural hair. If you’re able, only wash your hair once every 7-8 days so that there is plenty of time for your natural oils to thoroughly coat each strand of hair and bring them to life.

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #5

Promote hair growth with supplements. Maintaining your vitamins and minerals is important to general health (in addition to hair health), but taking certain supplements can strengthen your hair and speed up hair growth super fast. Doctors recommend taking biotin or viviscal (read reviews for viviscal here...)- these are supplements used specifically for promoting hair and nail growth.

Additionally, making sure you have enough vitamin D and vitamin A will help your hair too.

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #6

Avoid putting chemicals in your hair. Although it may seem like a given, you to stay away from all perms and hair relaxers when trying to transition your hair. In addition, stay away from hair dyes and bleach, as these cause significant damage to your hair, causing it to break and become frizzy. Look for all natural alternatives to chemicals you typically use, as these will be much safer on your scalp and strands than harsh chemicals are.
