Top 10 Highest-Rated Shea Butters

If you've been in the natural hair community for any amount of time, it will come as no surprise to you that Shea Butter is one of the most beloved and useful natural hair products on the planet.

So I'd be an idiot not to give you the top 10 highest rated shea butters online.

Shea Butter provides moisture to dry or damaged hair from the roots to the very tips, repairs and protects your hair against weather damage, dryness and brittleness. It also absorbs quickly and completely into the scalp to rehydrate without clogging your pores. It is especially helpful for processed and heat-treated hair. It's a go-to treatment for dry scalp problems and it brings life and luster to damaged hair.

I personally have used it for years and years and years on my skin (I was born in 1977). And believe me, my skin shows great results now from years of keeping my face moisturized every morning. Shea Butter is like food for the skin containing Vitamins A, E and F. These vitamins fight against wrinkles and facial lines.

Here are the shea butters with nothing less than 4 Star ratings...

The L.O.C. Method Explained - Amazingly Moisturizing!!!

Please click the Facebook SHARE BUTTON on the upper-left to share BlackHairOMG with friends, it helps us keep writing free info!

The L.O.C. Method has been around for a while and for very good reason.

If your natural hair sucks up everything you use to moisturize it and still cries out for more moisture, then it's probably time to test out what so many other naturals SWEAR BY, the L.O.C Method.

The L.O.C. Method has been a hot topic around the web and natural hair community for the longest now because it helps so many natural-haired women go days without having to CONSTANTLY re-moisturize their luscious locks.

L.O.C. is an abbreviation for leave-in conditioner, oil and cream. The name itself tells us naturals the types of hair products we should apply as well as the order to use them.

What makes the L.O.C. Method different from so many other moisturizing methods is the layering of products in a specific order to maximize moisture retention in your natural hair. The layer of hair-healin

Have You Tried The L.O.C Method?
Have You Tried The L.O.C Method?

g moisture is systematically locked in by two products which are both known to be excellent sealants: oil and hair butter.

Both oil and hairs butters are universally adored for their ability to create a moisture layer along your hair shaft that helps to prevent water from dissipating, in effect, helping the hair stay healthily moisturized for much longer.

By using oil first and then a heavier and thicker butter on top, you're making absolutely sure that as much moisture as possible remains on the hair shaft which is very beneficial for natural hair honeys who struggle to keep the needed moisture in their hair.

The method is so easy to blend into your routine because it involves some of the best-selling natural hair products on the market, products you probably already own,  so you just need to switch the order in which you apply them to your lusciousness. You'll be looking like a natural hair model in no time!

If you want to start using the L.O.C. Method then simply follow these easy steps below:

Directions

1. Apply a moisturizing water-based leave-in conditioner to cleansed hair.
2. Apply a thin layer of oil to your hair to help lock in the moisture.
3. Apply a butter-based, creamy moisturizer to your hair to seal that moisture in.

After that feel free to use your normal hair styling products to style your hair as normal.

Porosity

The L.O.C. Method will work best for Type 4 naturals because our hair is commonly very thirsty for moisture. BUT, also keep in mind that your hair porosity level will also determine whether the L.O.C. Method works for you or not.

If your hair is normal to high porosity then you should have no problem with layering products on your hair. However, if you have low porosity hair and try this method you risk of getting limp and oily hair that could be susceptible to a lot of product build up. Lastly, if you’re not a Type 4 natural but still struggle with moisture retention then give the L.O.C. Method a try – so many natural swear by it!

Alternatives

As with all things curly hair related it’s all about trial and error so if your current routine isn’t quite cutting it then give this method a try and modify it to suit your needs.

If your curls are easily weighed down, or if you suffer from product build up you can limit the number of products you apply to your hair by applying a creamy or buttery product as your styler.

Make sure you try it out for at least 2 weeks or three wash sessions before deciding if it works for your hair or not.

The Max Hydration Method! - Complete Natural Hair Tutorial

The Max Hydration Method is all the rage these days for women with type 4 natural hair. If you haven't heard of it, you will now!

max hydration method 1The Max Hydration Method is, "a 5-step regimen that systematically increases moisture levels in the hair until Max Hydration is reached",  according to the MHM website. This hydration method was invented by Black Hair Media Forum VIP Member Pinke Cube and it was created to defeat the often-believed notion that wash and go hairstyles don't work on type 4 hair.  Although the method can be done on other types of hair as well.

So what exactly is the Max Hydration Method for natural hair, how does it work, and are the results for real? Let's get into it a bit, shall we?

Who is the Max Hydration Method for?
As we have come to learn, The Max Hydration Method was designed for type 4 hair.

What does it do?
Pinke Cube, MissDeeKay, and other proponents say that the Max Hydration Method will transform dry, frizzy, undefined natural hair into highly-defined coils and curls that clump -- with or without natural hair products.

On top of that, they say that once your hair reaches the max hydration level, many of the bothersome issues that plague type 4 hair (dryness, knots, styling problems, length retention) will go away like magic.

The Max Hydration Method In Detail

In order for the Max Hydration Method to work effectively and quickly; you MUST (no excuses) follow the procedure accurately, consistently, and faithfully perform applications of this method to your crown. At least daily (pretty hurts right?), but if you can't do it everyday just don't stretch out the time between applications longer than every 3 days. Why? Because this is how long your hair conditioner will last. When doing this be mindful of what your hair responds to best, so you can pick the best options that will best benefit your natural hair.

You'll also need to have a decent understanding of which natural hair products you put on your hair that cause your hair to lose moisture. You'll need more than a shallow belief that "softness always means moisture", which is a false premise in the first place. You'll need to understand which product/substances affect (block) how your hair shaft actually absorbs the moisture, and what isn't effective enough to seal it in.

Prep Step For Max Hydration Method Newbies

If you're doing the Max Hydration Method for the first time, it's suggested that you begin with a Cherry Lola Treatment (both Advanced or No-Frill are fine). After that, this can be done as often as every 2 weeks. Admittedly, we lean towards the modified version, along with the liquid aminos. You will notice the hydration effects on your hair for months and month allowing you to enjoy root to tip definition in certain areas of your hair.

The Advanced Max Hydration Method (Our Favorite)

The advanced version of the Max Hydration Method is a combination of the Caramel Treatment, and Cherry Lola.

Ingredients:

Blend the ingredients in your blender, saturate your dry (but detangled) hair completely from root to tip with the mixture. Put a shower cap on and let sit for 1.5-2 hours. After that, rinse thoroughly with warm/hot water. Now you'll need to co-wash with botanical conditioner (whatever you wash your hair with will be fully absorbed into the hair shaft, so avoid silicones, parabens, sulfates, drying denatured alcohol), lastly, apply more conditioner but leave it in your hair and seal everything with a quality botanical gel.

The No-Frill Max Hydration Method

If you choose to do the no-frill Max Hydration Method recipe, it is similar to the advanced method and still very effective. The only changes are that you will skip the vinegar, over-ripe banana/plantain, avocado, egg, and molasses. Leave these out and continue with your co-wash, after that you'll do your wash and go.

DO NOT do an apple cider vinegar rinse directly after this. You can do a co-wash and maybe do a cold rinse with conditioner afterword and that will be enough to close up your hair cuticles again. The point of temporarily opening the hair cuticle is so that moisture can get in, it makes no sense to close them up before actually infusing the ever-important moisture into your hair.

PRO TIP: An excellent option would be to Green House Effect Method (GHE) or deep condition overnight directly after rinsing out the treatment, this applies to both the advanced version, and the No-Frill version. In the morning you can continue with the given methods to close your cuticles, or simply proceed to wash and go. This will quicken the pace of your hydration retention levels, and is seen by many as the best way to take advantage of the treatment.

Step 1: Clarify

Option 1: Apple cider vinegar rinse. You do a 1:1 ratio of apple cider vinegar with water in an applicator bottle. Apply in sections. Let it sit in the hair for 30 mins - 1 hr before rinsing.

Option 2: Baking soda rinse. Mix 1.5 tablespoons of baking soda into 1/3 a cup conditioner. Apply to your hair in sections and let sit on your hair for 10-30 minutes.

Option 3: Alternating between either rinse. You can opt to do each rinse every other day/night. It's up to you to experiment.

Step 2: Co-Wash & Detangle

Option 1: Apply warm conditioner in your hair in sections. Let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse out with warm water, while detangling under the water. If you are doing this step, first pour the conditioner into a microwavable bowl, and microwave for no more than 10-15 seconds if you are using the microwave to heat your hair conditioner. Don't EVER just stick the bottle of conditioner straight into the microwave. You've been warned... Stern Smile

Option 2: Apply conditioner to your hair in sections, and deep condition by covering your hair in a shower cap. Maybe put a scarf over it to trap heat. This can be done overnight if you prefer that method. The first two steps can actually be done before bed, in the morning, you can detangle your hair before going in the shower or also under the running water in section, your hair will have enough slip to detangle outside of the shower though.

Option 3: Detangle, apply conditioner to your hair, put on a shower cap, and steam your hairMany naturals steam once a week, and this will allow you to do your hair every 2-3 days if you prefer (the Secura S-192 hair steamer is a proven winner). But if you haven't reached max hair hydration it's recommended that you start off steaming your hair more often and you can taper back once your hair has reached maximum hydration. Be sure to detangle before getting in the shower and in the shower under the running water, similar to the prior option.

Step 3: Bentonite clay rinse

With all options, leave the rinse on the hair for at least 15 minutes before rinsing, and remember to apply in sections.

Option 1: Bentonite clay rinse with out apple cider vinegar

Ingredients list (rough measurements):
1 cup bentonite clay
1.5 cup warm water
1 tbspn of honey
1 tblspn of olive oil

Option 2: bentonite clay with apple cider vinegar Same, just add vinegar.

Option 3: Ready made bentonite clay rinse, or any other type of clay used to clarify hair examples like rhassoul clay or terrasentials.

Step 4: Leave in Conditioner
Be sure to avoid any conditioner with silicones, sulfates, and drying alcohols. Other than that, apply thoroughly in sections, you really want your hair to be good and wet. application techniques include smoothing and raking, twirling or whatever technique works for you. These are suggestions, there's no set rule on specific application techniques, just apply enough so your hair glides through and you feel slip. Same with gel.

Step 5: Apply Botanical Gel of your choice

Option 1: Use a small amount of oil (or however much you feel you need) for extra sealing before gel if you find you need it, for more softness.

Layering options can be LCO, or LCOC (Liquid Cream Oil Cream), but never do the LOC layering order. oil is not a moisturizer, its a sealant. you wouldn't put gel on before conditioner, so don't practice that with oil.Shocked

Option2: Don't. It's up to you.

In application of gel, you should be putting enough so you can feel the gel slip, that way you know it's coated the hair. A technique that has worked for me is starting the gel application at the base of the section, like slicking your edges or applying a root touch up with hair dye. Then smooth it down the rest of the strand and proceed to rake, smooth, and spread the gel evenly. Apply more gel if you need to spread it further. Do this in sections and twirl and clip the sections away with a shower clip as you go along. This will help keep you organized. Doing both the leave in and gel step, it takes 30-40 minutes, so it's pretty quick and painless.  It's advised to section your hair and do both steps as you go along instead of going over your entire head twice.

This is the step where you will see your curls pop and clump together!

Finished.

BONUS TIP: Optional Step For sStretching

Step 6: Stretching Options

Option 1: Clipping

It's recommended to take as many sections as you need, twirling/rolling/single twisting/French roll whatever you call it, and clipping it in place. Leave it like that for maybe 30 minutes or as you get dressed, take the clips out, and shake. This should give a slight stretch.

Option 2: Wear your hair in a rolled half ponytail

You can actually do this on short hair. Just section the top of your hair (the part used in making a half pony) and section that into two on either sides (left and right).

Take one section of freshly defined hair (don't worry about it being wet, the definition stays) and roll it towards the back of your head like a French roll, pinning in place. (Make sure not to pull the hair too taught when rolling. The pins will be enough to keep the look in place without over flattening the curl definition) Do the same with the other side. Wear this for the day. When you get back, your hair will be dry. Take the pins out, unroll your hair and shake. Your hair will be stretched but sticking up. Take a satin scarf and arrange your hair the way you want it to fall before gently securing it (not to tight).

By the morning your hair will of course be mushed, but the actual curls will remain unfrizzed, and they won't be completely obliterated either (a big problem many have w/ set styles) because of the gel. Now take your fingers to your roots and jiggle them in a back and forth motion, gently. This should shake loose your now stretched curls for second day hair.

If you want a stretch for third day, you only have to put the scarf on your head to sleep at night.

This should stretch the top half of your hair for a bob like shape, but won't interfere with the curl pattern like twisting and braiding would, and also with out drying your hair out with heat.

Curl Defining Products Reviews From Other Naturals

1. Aunt Jackies Curl La La Defining Curl Custard

"Amazing Definition!"

By SharLia

curl defining-productsI'm less than 24 hours natural (just got my relaxed ends cut today) and this is the first product I've used. Let me say, prior to putting this in hair my curl definition was non-existent. This stuff tightened my curl pattern, and made my hair incredibly soft, and moisturized. I can't stop touching it.

I'm going to have to pick up some more, because I have never had a natural hair product work AND be so affordable. I love my natural hair but with this stuff i love it even more...TRY IT!

2. Bio Infusion Curl Creme

This curl pomade is the BOMB. Works great on dry hair. The curl creme is good but it has a LOUD fragrance... It's not as noticeable the next day. If you have thin hair you may want avoid this product. Bio infusion curl creme is paraben and sulfate free. You don't have to use a lot of the product to get the defined curl look that you want. You get a good bang for your buck with this one.

3. Darcy Botanical Sweet Coco Bean Curl Smoothing Cream

"Great for high porosity curly hair"

By Sheri

My hair requires a lot of moisture, and it's texture ranges from silky curls to frizz. I put the Darcy Botanical Sweet Coco Bean Curl Smoothing Cream product on my wet hair and let it dry naturally. My hair feels healthier and the curls are more pronounced. I also used a botanical spray gel for curly hair, to tame the frizzy sections and to have a more manageable style. I'm pleased with this product- and I like the vanilla bean smell, and would definitely purchase again!

3. Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream

"Wonderful Curling Cream"

By Rebecca Cunningham

I bought this at Target I have used the co-wash and leave in conditioner which both are great. Cantu's products are on the low end for natural hair care and it delivers what it promises. I have used Miss Jessie's in the past which is ridiculously priced and doesn't curl my hair like this. I do not even have to use gel for the style to stay I love it. I have regular black folk hair with a little water, leave in conditioner and this product it curls just fine. I have also used Carols daughter Healthy Hair Butter which also brings out the curl pattern but I have to use a little gel with that to maintain the curls. Use what works on your hair do not go broke trying to find a natural hair care product to give your hair curls that it was not created to have. Enjoy the texture God gave you and be blessed.

4. Edens Bodyworks All Natural Curl Defining Cream

"My Go-To Curl Defining Magic!"

By Karen J.

Yes, I like this product and it has become by base product from which others are judged. curl defining-products edenIt is trusted and never let's me down. I even achieved my first wash and go with this product on 4b/c hair. It produced loose coily curls. Another good product for Wash and Go is the As I Am Naturally line and it produces a tighter coil and a different Wash and Go look.

My daughter who has more 4c than b does not achieve a wash and go with this product. Perhaps her hair needs more moisturizing since she is swimming everyday this summer, before she can achieve a wash and go with this product.

The product is primarily used to keep my ends and overall hair moisturized. On my hair it produces a soft hold. I am still very heavy handed using products so it is also oily to the touch, but that should change as I master the use of styling products.

Outstanding trustworthy product.

5. SheaMoisture Coconut Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie

"Perfect"

By A. Allen

Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie is an EXCELLENT creme hair dress and conditioner--think Vitapointe Creme Daily Hairdress, 7 Ounce or Liv Creme Hairdressing and Conditioner kicked up a dozen notches just for curls. No mineral oil, petroleum and beeswax--Shea, coconut , mango, aloe silk protein instead!

This product is best used just as you would a creme hairdressing. I use this in the same may my mother used Liv on my hair when I was little for braids/braid-outs, finger curls, twist/twist-outs and smoothing ponytails. It works great as a layer on wet hair. Use it after your leave-in conditioner and before your sealing oil. You only need a tiny bit for shine, moisture and de-frizzing . I tap my finger lightly into the product for each braid, twist etc. and take a little more only if I need it.

Do not expect hold from this product! I DO NOT use it to set my "wash and go". Curl Enhancing Smoothie is not intended to perform like an Eco Styler Gel or Kinky Curly Curling Custard. On the other hand, because the product hydrates curls, it is great for finishing your "wash and go" or "rod set" after it dries. It's also great for refreshing second day hair because it helps curls to spring back and smooths frizz.

My best advice for using Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie is use it to do what it's supposed to do.

6. Kinky-Curly Curling Custard

Review From BlackHairOMG Staff:

So many naturals tell us that Kinky-Curly Curling Custard is a tough natural hair product to master. It’s full of nourishing botanicals like agave nectar extract, aloe vera juice and marshmallow, and has a very slippery and goopy texture. curl defining products A little goes a long way, as it instantly clumps and smoothes your coils. Expect extremely shiny and springy coils. Although it works best on very tight, coarse coils in the “4” category, it might pack too much of a punch for loose curls.

Overall, ladies love this product for natural hair! It works great on hair that is 4a-4c and this natural hair product helps to define your curls and coils beautifully. We've noticed that some of the curly hair product reviewers are saying that this Kinky-Curly Curling Custard does not work for their 4-something type hair. The real problem is that some people don't truly understand their hair type. 4a type hair has S shaped strands with small yet a defined curl pattern and 4b hair generally has Z-shaped strands with no defined curl or coil pattern.

Remember that this product is not a chemical curl enhancer or a hair relaxer, therefore it won't give 4b hair a curl pattern when it doesn't already have one. Our suggestion to all those unsure of your natural hair type is to wash all products/oils/gels out of your hair with a clarifying shampoo then condition, rinse and air dry your hair. If you do not have defined curls or coils and your hair looks like a lovely soft fluffy cloud then you have gorgeous 4b hair. If you have 4b hair don't bother buying this product for Wash-n-Gos. Instead use it for twist-outs or braids-outs for similar results.

Be warned.... Some believe that regular Wash-n-Gos are unhealthy for type 4 hair anyway - the reason being the tangling that comes from 4a/b hair's super shrinkage may lead to breakage. It's recommended that all hair in the type 4 range be kept moist and stretched with ends protected at all times to keep breakage and tangling at a minimum. Many type 4 naturalistas are able to retain 6" of hair growth a year following this rule so give it a try.

Oh and KCCC works really great when you pair it with a superior leave in conditioner like Kinky-Curly Knot Today or Sensories Smooth Passionflower and Aloe leave in. Other curly hair products that are worth mentioning are Deva curl products for curly hair, we will have a few reviews on their best curl defining products very soon so subscribe to BlackHairOMG today for future updates!

Honest Q Redew Reviews From Naturals

q-redew reviewsIf you are looking for Q Redew reviews, you're going to be very happy. We have a bunch of naturals telling you exactly what the QRedew steamer does for natural hair and if you need to buy it or not.

We wanted to do this hair steamer review for them in order to be fair too, since we've done a huetiful hair steamer review already.

When the QRedew came on the market, it was different from other products. Hair product review after review talked about how it could be used as a moisturizer, a curl refresher AND as a deep conditioner tool.

The Q-Redew handheld hair steamer is great for naturals because it uses warm steam as mist to enhance your hair’s natural texture and volume. The Q-Redew hydrates, reshapes and restyles dry hair in minutes according to its site.

What Are Q Redew Reviews Raving About?

Ease of Use – Women are to busy to be bothered with complicated hair equipment, people have lives to live, jobs to work and kids to raise. The Q-Redew hair steamer is super easy to set up and use. You simply fill the water reservoir, plug it in, and wait for the red light to say it is ready. The bonus is you can steam your hair in sections. If you are styling your hair, you steam, add your moisturizers, and style that section. If you are interrupted, you can stop and continue where you left off.

Works as a Super Moisturizer – So as you should already know, heat helps moisturizers get into the hair shaft. The Q Redew reviews have been claiming that this machine is like a hand-held super-moisturizer. When your hair needs a serious shot of moisture, naturals have been turning to the QRedew to handle the job. For example, If you have an old, dry twist out. You can just steam it, add a premium leave-in conditioner, and seal with an oil. Some naturals choose to do this instead of co-washing their natural hair.

Curl-Refreshing Ability – While water is moisturizing for natural hair, too much can cause tangling and excess shrinkage. This is a problem many naturalistas have to fight against. With the QRedew Steamer, you can quickly refresh your kinks and curls without applying too much water and causing shrinkage. For many naturals this advantage is a game changer.

The Q-Redew Work as a Detangler – Detangling my thick, dense hair is a battle that many naturals dread. Who doesn't HATE detangling? Well, according to the Q-redew reviews, when you use the natural hair steamer, it just melts through tangles with ease.

Safer Way to Stretch Your Hair – Many Q-Redew reviews mentioned that this tool is amazing for stretching your hair. When you steam an older do, your hair can get that moisturized blow out look!

Here are a Few Q-Redew Reviews From Other Naturals

4 out of 5 Stars - Q Redew Reviews Rating

A warning and a review....just buy this, it'll be worth it in the end.

First I want to say sorry for this long review but there is a good reason for it.
Ever since I found out about this product I have been trying to come up with clever ways to steam my hair without shelling out all the money for the Q-Redew. I tried using the steamer from my Caruso Steam Rollers, it was very uncomfortable and there wasn't enough steam for me. So I went out and bought a My Little Steamer, for $20, and there was a LOT of steam coming out of that little thing and it got pretty hot.

It worked for me but I started to notice something on my hair I have never seen, small white dots about 1/4 in. from the bottom of my strands, and when I pulled on them, my hair would break off. I looked up possible reasons why this could be happening and I found out that these are usually caused by using heat on wet hair, that causes bubbles to form on the strands of hair, called bubble hair.

You may be wondering why this is a part of my review, it is a warning to you all. I don't use heat on my hair very often, I feel that the extreme heat from this small steamer (My Little Steamer particularly) is what caused these bubbles on my hair, and I have seen reviews where women say they use this steamer on their hair, and I would not recommend it. That steamer is definitely good for clothes, but not for hair (but that is whole other review). Using that streamer was the only thing in my regimen that had changed over the 2 weeks I was using it and noticed the damage to my hair. I really want to stress that in this review.

Ladies although you may have a found a loop hole around buying this device, you might end up experiencing the damage I experienced just to save a few bucks. Finally this brings me to my review of the Q-Redew. I know the price is scarey, but go sign up on the Q-Redew mailing list and wait on a good coupon, I used a $20 off coupon I got for a Black Friday sale, so in the end, the damage to my hair from the clothes steamer and the coupon made me decide to fork out the money for this device. I received it today, once they shipped it I got it within a few days, a lot sooner than I had expected.

I have 3c/4a medium porosity hair, and I am working on 4 day old dirty hair that has been in an afro puff 3 of those days and today I am rocking flattened, limp, slept on twist out from last night...I plugged this baby in, waited for it to heat up and went to work. I am very pleased with the results, my hair looking good and full and happy. It's looking like a good third day hair where my curls are full and yet still a little defined but not a matted mess. I only had to refill this once to complete my hair. I am excited about using this for my detangling and deep conditioning sessions.
It is a lot smaller than I expected. I like the vintage mint green color, and I am very pleased that I decided to purchase this product. I do feel like women who like crunchy or stiff ultra defined curls may not like this product. I personally like that it give my hair volume and makes it look fuller within minutes. I don't need ultra defined curls I just want big happy healthy hair. I only knocked off 1 star because of the price.

I have NEVER had a better product. I use this thing at least twice a week. I steam, detangle, condition, and use it as a facial treatment some nights. I LOVVVVE it! I have 2 different textures in my hair, fine 4b on top and thick 4a on bottom. The texture on top always breaks no matter the technique. I have maximum hydrated, curly and tightly coiled, wide toothed combed, water only, hennaed, and oiled and sealed, It still breaks when I detangle. This Q-Redew has cut my breakage down and my anxiety. I have retained my entire 1 and 1/2 inches over the past 3 months. I even use it on my kids hair who all have different textures on the chart.
I dont have to spend dreadful time in the bathtub detangling their hair. I pull out the Q-Redew and its detangled, oiled, and styled in 10 minutes at the most AND it looks, feels, and is healthy. I can not express how much I love this thing. If you are having issues with your hair, if you have tried every method in the book, if you have curly, coily, or kinky hair then this tool is for you!

The only con I have experienced is that I have to refill the thing after each section of hair. To cut down on the annoyance of that, I keep a water bottle and fill up after each section. Refilling is not enough for me to remove a star. I fill like if the receptacle was bigger, the steamer could not be handheld, so I'm cool with it.

I hate screwing with my hair...there, said it. I am not one to spend an hour fussing and fussing ---I want to wash it, scrunch some product in it and go. And I want to have my hair look good the next day as well. Yup, asking for a lot. Well, with the Q-Redew Steamer, I can spend 5 minutes or less on my naturally curly hair on day two (often day 3 as well) and go. This item is so worth the money---it really works!

Had this for years & used it two times. Started using it this winter between wash weeks & I love it. I now wash every 2 weeks. This is a natural girl staple. Awesome product.

For my 4c hair that constantly needs moisturizing, this little gadget is simple and easy to use in the mornings. I do the LCO method almost every morning so this really helps. And it absolutely helps with detangling. I use it for everything. If you have 4c (really 4e) type hair, then you need this. Trust me!!

This product is easy to use. Fill the reservoir, plug it up, wait a few minutes... then bam!!! it's ready for use. It doesn't do as great a job as the hooded steamers, but its great for a midweek moisture booster.

How to Transition From Relaxed to Natural Hair In 7 Steps

Transitioning from relaxed to natural hair when beginning your natural hair journey is a common experience.

To go from permed to natural hair, you have two options: Transitioning or The Big Chop. Which one you choose is entirely up to you. There's no textbook right way or wrong way to begin your natural hair journey. It doesn’t matter how you get there, it's about getting there and doing what you're most comfortable with doing.

The transition from relaxed hair to natural hair can be a challenge - sometimes dealing with split ends, odd curly bits, and some hair breakage. But don't give up, it's not called a "journey" for nothing, all journeys have some bumps in the road. But rest assured that your hair is on a route to recovery. Getting back to your "natural" beauty is a beautiful thing and an interesting road to self discovery.

What Does Transitioning From Relaxed to Natural Hair Mean?

Like we talked about earlier, transitioning is a way to avoid cutting all of your hair off, doing "The Big Chop" as it is called.

Transitionintransitioning from relaxed to natural hairg your hair to natural is the process of eliminating all chemical treatments and allowing your natural hair to grow out while gradually trimming the chemically-processed ends away. It takes time and patience but for many women it is worth the wait because they may be uncomfortable big chopping.

Most women who transition to natural hair slowly trim their relaxed ends away as they grow the relaxer/perm out of their hair, this also helps to keep breakage manageable and it gives your hair a more healthy appearance.

Pros of Transitioning From Relaxed to Natural Hair :

  • You have the time to learn about your particular hair type.
  • If you are not comfortable with short hair, then you can avoid that adjustment period, and avoid the wait of growing your hair back out.
  • During transitioning you have the time to perfect your hair styling skills.

Cons of Transitioning From Relaxed to Natural Hair :

  • The texture of your hair will not be consistent: which means if you decide to wear your hair in a braid out or twist out style the root of your hair might be curly while your ends will be bone straight (To avoid this simply roll the ends of your hair with rods or rollers).
  • The process of transitioning takes longer than if you just did “the big chop”.

How to Transition From Relaxed to Natural Hair In 7 Steps

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #1

Keep your hair hydrated. The biggest struggle with transitioning your hair is preventing breakage due to dryness and damage. Do what you can to keep your hair conditioned and fully hydrated by using a conditioner on a regular basis. Every night before bed, thoroughly moisturize your hair with either coconut oil or olive oil and let it soak in good for 30 minutes to 1 hour. This will help replenish your hair with nutrients that will strengthen the demarcation line (the part of the hair where the transition is happening).

  • When you wash your hair, add a little conditioner to your strands prior to shampooing. This will help to keep the shampoo from stripping all the moisture. Then, condition as usual.
  • Consider using a leave-in conditioner for your hair during the day. Apply some to your hair before you style it, paying careful attention to the demarcation line.

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #2

Use a deep conditioner regularly. Deep conditioning treatments take moisturizing your hair to the next level. Although deep conditioners are usually only used once a month or so, you need to do it more often when transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. Purchase a deep-conditioning treatment for naturals and apply it to your hair at least once every 7 days. Or if you have the money to do so, you can go to the hair salon once a week and get deep-conditioning treatments regularly.

  • Follow the bottle instructions for your deep conditioner.
  • If your money is low, another great alternative to a deep conditioner is using mayonnaise. Although it sounds a little gross, it can work wonders on adding moisture to your hair. Apply it to your hair once a week for 30 minutes to an hour.
  • If you decide to have a professional deep condition your hair, try looking for someone who specializes in transitioning hair. They’ll be able to provide you with products and services designed specifically to meet your needs.

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #3

Don't put heat on your hair, it's a natural hair killer. In general, hot tools should be avoided if you’re trying to protect your hair. Using curling irons, flat irons, and blow driers can stress your hair and cause breakage, specifically at the line of demarcation. While transitioning your hair, do all that you can to allow it to be as natural as possible. Avoid hot tools, and if necessary, limit their use to only one day a week at most.

  • If you absolutely must use hot tools, keep them away from the demarcation line and avoid using them on your roots where your natural grow-out is forming.

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #4

Limit the amount of times you wash your hair. This goes hand in hand with adding moisture to your hair; washing your hair frequently strips your hair of its natural oils that help keep it strong. So limit hair washing and some women have had great success with co-washing natural hair. If you’re able, only wash your hair once every 7-8 days so that there is plenty of time for your natural oils to thoroughly coat each strand of hair and bring them to life.

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #5

Promote hair growth with supplements. Maintaining your vitamins and minerals is important to general health (in addition to hair health), but taking certain supplements can strengthen your hair and speed up hair growth super fast. Doctors recommend taking biotin or viviscal (read reviews for viviscal here...)- these are supplements used specifically for promoting hair and nail growth.

Additionally, making sure you have enough vitamin D and vitamin A will help your hair too.

Transitioning from Relaxed to Natural Hair Rule #6

Avoid putting chemicals in your hair. Although it may seem like a given, you to stay away from all perms and hair relaxers when trying to transition your hair. In addition, stay away from hair dyes and bleach, as these cause significant damage to your hair, causing it to break and become frizzy. Look for all natural alternatives to chemicals you typically use, as these will be much safer on your scalp and strands than harsh chemicals are.

That's It!

You now know exactly how to transition from relaxed hair to natural while beginning natural hair journeys. It's a truly beautiful thing to see the amazing styles and natural beauty on display. Please feel free to ask more questions of other natural in the Natural Hair Lovers - BlackHairOMG Group!

Hair Butter Review For Type 4b Hair Styles

I used this product to set my hair in twists, flat twists and braids on many occasions.

I thoroughly massaged my ends with this product to keep them from getting dry.

I used the entire jar up in under a month and was very upset that I had no more.

4b type hair butterEditor’s Note: Jenell Stewart from kinkycurlyme.com gives a helpful review as she always does, this time she reviewed a product that works very well for type 4b hair.

The natural hair care product is called Pura Body Naturals Cupuacu Hair, she tried the Tahitian Vanilla scent and the cost was $14 for 4 ounces. She does a good job of breaking down the pros and cons. Here are our article highlights:

  • Jenell felt that the price for only 4 ounces of hair butter was a bit high at $14.
  • Jenell has kinky curly coily type 4b hair, after using the hair butter her ends felt great and her twist out had great definition too.
  • The hair butter has a great Tahitian vanilla scent.
